Help With Multiplayer! Please!

When I try and log into a multiplayer session (Well, just starting multiplayer altogether) and then the big data table comes up saying "Connecting to main server" or something, and I sit and wait, and wait, and wait, and wait some more, and after 30 minutes of waiting, there ARE no servers.

So, I tried to install the patch. Well, when I did install the latest Microsoft Patch for it, (Version 1.2, I think?) It still said "Version 1.0" in the main menu screen. It still wouldnt start multiplayer. So I tried the unofficial 1.4 patch, and that didnt work either. I dont know how to get multiplayer to "go", so, got any ideas?

You may want to read through the MP Forum. Or repost there. Sorry I can't help, but I have never played in MP.

Do a clean install of FL, and don't use any patches or mods. If you're using a firewall like ZoneAlarm or Norton, it could be waiting for you to allow the game through. Alt-Tab out to the desktop and let it through.

There is lots of fixes posted over and over for a non-connection with the FL global list server. Please consider the search function in the future.

Basically it is usually a DirectPlay problem, which is part of DirectX. Try installing/reinstalling with the latest version v9.0b. Use DxDiag.exe to diagnose DirectX. It could also be an OUTGOING firewall, like ZoneAlarm, as LaserMeat mentions.

Issues with WinXP's firewall now and in the future when M$'s massive patch turns the firewall on by default, are only prevelant when running an FL server. But because WinXP's firewall has UPnP it self-configure's itself for the one INCOMING port flserver.exe (Fl server executable) needs.

The patch should ONLY be used for a server install, NOT a client install. Even if you do there is no indication, FL version remains at 1.0. I believe the SDK, the so-called FL v1.4 incorporates parts of the patch (I could be wrong, please search for FL SDK v1.4 in TLR downloads for details) but it too does not change FL displayed version.

this maybe a really dumb question but are you sure u are connected? and IMO its better to open a few holes for the firewall coz it might help more data transfer. Patching isnt really necessary. i never did any patching up till now and still able to play.

Dont worry, I figured out I just needed to shut off ZoneAlarm, and that did the trick.
