Do you get a message?
Does your comp connect to the global server ? (look at the top right of teh screen.
Do you even get the server list at all? (be it full or empty)

Several problems may cause this. One may be a firewall problem. This prevents you from connecting to teh global server. Check the settings on your firewall (If you have one that is). There should be a list of programs that are or aren't allowed to connect to Internet. See if Freelancer is in that list and if it's blocked or not. If it is, unblock it and it should work.

This is probably the thing that's buggering you, but still we can't be sure unless you give us a bit more info.
