The only problem is that SP2 is reported to "break" some games an applications due to the "security optimisations" present. I for one, won't be downloading it .

Yeah, but you, for one, drive a Kangaroo

And what if you don't have any of teh SP's (like me) is it a good thing to install SP1 or SP2 or both or what?

Nickless - You go and insult me, and now you want my help, eh? Shove it, buddy!

Well, SP1a has quite a few fixes, and is probably your best best. I myself have SP1, and I have not noticed any problems, so that it also a possibility. For a person like you (non-techy ), you should probably download all of the patches at MS within the next few months untul SP2 is released. Thus, with the latest patches, SP2 may not really be necessary (provided that you have a good firewall).

It is my understanding from the last article I read about it, was that SP2 is maining going to enhance XP for the 64bit chips by Athlon. If that is true, then there would really be no reason to download it. As Esquilax said, just downloading the patches and the hot fixes should do you well. Esquilax you are correct that SP2 does have some problems with games because of the "Security Optimisations", but it is still in the beta stage. So hopefully these will be corrected before the final release comes out. Making a long winded answer short, download SP1 or SP1a, but stay away from SP2 just yet.

We'll see about that KR. In the beta stage it might be, but MS are going all out to make this "the most secure patch ever!" . Therefore, I still believe that it will "break" apps and games, and then MS will have to patch the patch .

Sometimes I really wonder if some people were born with a brain.

I'll keep this short...Install service pack 2. It has some nice additions.

The games run fine.

No its not for 64bit Athlons. There is a 64bit edition of XP out for 64bit platforms.

Now...

Is this thread even worth the couple k its taking up on the server???

@Nickless - Personally, I would install SP1. It does address some stability issues in both XP home and pro. You will especially find it helpful with the Geforce FX series cards. It addresses some compatibility issues with some older hard ware. But if everything is running fine, it truely is up to you.

@keepgood - Yes there is a version of Windows out there for 64 bit processors. It is called Windows 2003 Server. The 64 bit processors that this OS has all the nescissary built in extensions for are the Intel Xenon and AMD Opteron. These are mainly used for server aplications, and do NOT support many programs that the home user would utilize. Yes, XP Pro can support those processors, but one would still be unable to run most programs that your average user would use. Microsoft, with SP2, is adding the nescisary instructions for AMD's FX and Athlon 64 chips to run more smoothly with the XP family of operating systems. This is meant to be a temporary measure until Microsoft come out with the interim OS, working name of XP Reloaded. These chips will not run at their peak effiency until then.

XP Reloaded is designed to be a massive update to both XP Home and Pro. Much as the way Win 98 and Me were for Win 95. Micorsoft projects that their true 64 bit operating system for non-server aplications, working name of Longhorn, will not be released until 2006.

I appoligize if their was any confusion with my last post on this matter.

Nickless - The service packs are designed to be compilations of all updates, as well as some other "optimisations" such as tweaks to the kernel. It's usually a good idea to install the service pack and then remain up-to-date by installing the latest patches.

KeepGood - Was that broadside aimed at me? If so, I would be interested to learn exactly why you feel that games will "run fine" or SP2 despite the statements made by MS to the contrary. Maybe FL will be fine because it supports DirectX natively, and is a game produced by "MS Game Studios". Still, what if Nickless wished to play an older game such as "Privateer" or "Quake 2"? Would these games also "run fine" under SP2? Perhaps you should wait and see what happens before shooting your mouth off and insulting people for no other reason than that they disagree with you.

Kingrat - It's quite amusing that MS keep confirming and then denying that "XP Reloaded" will be created, eh?

Esquilax - I find it funny as well. Especially since I beta tested for Microsoft from 1997-2000. Usually I get my information straight from the horse's mouth but they do not even know what they are doing. So we will see. It might even be a patch for a patch for a patch!!! :B
