Odd Missile and Torpedo Firing Delay

I'm playing TNG online, flying a Hornet. Whenever I fire my plasma missiles, sunfire torps, or anti-matter torps, the ordinance in question appears at the location of its hardpoint and simply "hovers" there for four or five seconds. THEN it launches.

What gives?

Athlon XP 3200
Abit NF7-S w/ onboard sound
1GB Corsair XMS
Logitech MX700
ATI AIW 9600

Lag, High ping, bad connection, bad CPU, bad graph card, who knows.
Usually it's the connection that causes the delay. Check the ping before you log onto a server. The higher the worse. Lag is another possible reason, it's that yelow or red flashing icon in the top left of your screen. It's got something to do with the connection. Lower ping gives less lag, gives quicker response and your missiles will fire almost instantaniously.
