Freelancer Troubleshooting: Need Help

Recently after re-installing frelancer ive had troubles running it.
whenever i go ANYWHERE in the game, this includes the menus when u first start up the game it lags
it lags terribly
when in game it still lags no matter what settings i put it too.
before i reformatted and reinstalled it was working fine.
i havnt changed ANYTHING in the system at all apart from adding another 256 ddr ram
Windows 2000 - With all updates and service packs
Athlon 1600+ - Running at 1.4 Stock speed
ePox 8KHA+ - Via Drivers Up to date
Kyro 2 - Drivers up to date
512 DDR RAM - Stock Speeds

i might be the kyro 2 drivers but i cant find the version i had installed when it was working (version 1.0)
ive tryed defragging and reinstalling many times
i have a legit copy and there are no noticably sractches, apart from some very small ones.
i have abosolutely no idea why its doing this and would like to fix it asap

1. Get ms certifeid drivers
Goto My computer>properties>hardware>video adpt.>properties>update driver.

2. Check if DX has enabled d3d
Start>run "dxDiag">Display

try taking out the new 256mb stick of RAM. It could be faulty. It's very unlikly but it's possible.

CD-Scratches won't cause lag they'll just stop the game installing properly.
