RE: Startup Errors; Need help!

I have just installed Freelancer and I am recieving the following error message types after running the software:

Fatal Exception Error 0E
VXD--- error

System Specs:

P3 - 1ghz
256mb sdram
40gig hd
Nvidia Geforce 4 Titanium 4200 64mb (AGP 4x)
Sound Blaster Live! audio card
VIA mainboard
WIN98 os

If anyone can help me solve this mystery I would greatly appreciate it. Out of all the games in my collection I have never had a game after installation, cause such a mess.

All it tells me is that you have a memory exception error , probably related to a
virual device driver which is loaded into the protected= (ring-0) operating
system address space, and has full access to the system hardware.

VxDs can modify page tables directly, install true hardware interrupt handlers,
and generally wreak unrestricted havoc on the system.
VxDs can be used to virtualize physical hardware by intercepting application
requests to use the hardware and arbitrating between requests from different
applications. In the more extreme case, VxDs can provide a "virtual" device that
is not actually present at all, by emulating the behavior of a hardware device.
VxDs, by virtue of their privileged access to the system, can also be used to
implement software monitors, debuggers and to modify the behavior of other
software on the system.

VxDs under Windows 98 are also used to implement many other components=
of the OS, including the protected mode file system (IOS and IFS), the Virtual
Communication Architecture (VCOMM), plug and play (Configuration Manager,
etc.), and network transport and protocol

This was probably more then you were asking for , but you do not exactly provide all
that much information , my best bet is that you have some sort of device driver that is not
truly compatible , the best fix for a not to savy computer user is to reinstall the OS and
thus fix the problem

I have re-installed my os completely and the same thing happens. You mentioned
a "memory exception error". Could that mean that a specific range or address space in my memory is bad?

In theory , yes , but more likely you have a bad behaving driver , and taking FL in consodderation probably one for either your sound or your display

see if you can find updated drivers for either on the manufacturers websites and install them , also get directx 9.0b just to stay updated and get smoother gameplay once you get it up and running

I have a detailed report of the error messages I recieve:

1.) An exception 0E occured at 0028:c0059269 in VxD--. This was called from 0028:c16cdb63 in VxD--.

2.) An exception 0E has occured at 015f:bff89284

I have already installed updated drivers for my hardware. Nothing seems to work. I even tried it on another PC. It could not detect the sound/video cards. Maybe that is the problem, faulty programming? Like I said, I have never had a game do this to me on my system before.

I purchased Freelancer from Walmart superstore. How can you tell if it is an authentic copy?

Post Sat Nov 29, 2003 3:40 am

I fixed it! It was a simple matter of:

a. using DXDIALOG to disable sound acceleration in the sound tab
b. On the display tab, I disabled AGP TEXTURE ACCELERATION

Thank you all, for your suggestions and comments.

Don't tell me you do not know what a protected mode file system is , shame on you , or go get your education money back

But ok for you , here we go

FAT32 (and for the old geezers among us it is also known as VFAT) is a protected mode file system and there are controls whether fixed disk access is performed through Windows protected mode drivers or through real mode drivers and BIOS routines

The latter can corrupt the harddisk while running any windows OS higher then 95
(so SE 98, 98SE, ME, 2k , XP) hence the reason windows blocks such access and warns you of the program trying such access (if you want to see an example of that get a version of Norton utilies of 1999 or before and try to run for example DiskEdit or Norton DiskDoctor in a Doswindow

an other non related protected mode file system are Novell disk partitons

So now I have educated you , please transfer my hourly fee to my bank account
