can''t play MP

Why can i not join mp games? all i get when i connect to a server is "Please wait, the requested operation is takeing longer than expected", then it says connection to the server has been lost.

you do not provide all that much info but here we go with a few simple checks

wait untill the serverlist displays with the ping times, pick a server with a ping time under 200 and see if it occurs again.

If it does , check your firewall and see if it is blocking communication (simplest test would be to turn of your firewall for a quick test)

If it is not your firewall check your router

If you are on dialup make sure you are connected at atleast 48000 otherwise playing will be pretty much impossible

You say you have a router, is it a gateway/firewall/DHCP server AND firewall? A gateway could be accessed through a browser and and settings could be set. A router has no such option as it is a simple switch. If you have a gateway then you can switch off the firewall only if you knowingly enabled something called DMZ, was that done? If you have WinXP it's internal firewall could be on, is that also disabled? It's highly improbable but possible your ISP is blocking certain ports (this happens all the time on college campus' but not with an ISP).

Those ports for DirectPlay (part of DirectX) may not be used until FL connections to a remote server. Hence with the bocking or non-functioning of those ports you would never connect. What am I driving at? Basically update and test to the latest version of DirectX, currently v9.0b.

If u can scan and pick up servers then your firewall isn't blocking you.

You may need to change your IP with you cable company because bandwidth can alternate as I've noticed with NTL Broadband.
You can check your bandwidth here
If your not getting what you should ring your cable company.
Or check that a file sharing program isn't eating up you bandwidth and uninstall it. Even if their not on your programs bar, programs such as Imesh run in the background.
You could also use Ad-aware to clean off all the spyware programs hiding throughout your computer.

I heard somewhere in the forum that the 1.1 server patch can help people to get on multiplayer games. But make sure your finished in single play first because it's prone to cause bugs.
