Freelancer doesnt recognize my ATI card. Help!

The place to ask for technical help with running the demo or the full game...

Freelancer doesnt recognize my ATI card. Help!

My system stats:

AMD Mobile Athlon XP 2000+
512MB 266mhz DDR RAM
ATI RADEON 320M @ 128MB (Shared)
DirectX 9.0

When I run Freelancer, a window pops up announcing that it can't recognize my card. I choose to run anyway. The framerate is fine, and only a little bit of texture problems for fog and transparancies. The framerate REALLY chokes in asteroids and in the trade-lane.

My drivers are only 6 mos. old, but that shouldn't be an issue should it?

The drivers are actually the only thing I can think of that would be the problem. Head to ATI's site and download new drivers. If you still have problems, head to www.madonion.com and grab a benchmarking program like 3DMark. Compare your results with others that have similar setups (the program can do this for you). If you stack up well, the problem is Freelancer.

Just realized something in your comp's stats... You're playing this on a laptop? You're gonna take a performance hit on a notebook computer vs. a desktop. The mobile AMD architecture is probably what's killing you. I have an Athlon 1.2 desktop myself, and I love AMD's processors for being inexpensive workhorses, but Intel's CPUs and compatible motherboards run faster, especially on laptops.

Just downloaded new drivers.. trying them now.

I recently upgraded from 256 - 512mb ram.. and that did help, but a little.

Thing is.. other games run exceptionally smooth.. Jedi Knight Academy is great at 1024x768 everything highest detail. It experienced a tremendous performance increase when i upgraded the RAM.. at 512mb i was able to use 128 for graphics performance. that was money.

Freelancer however.. feh.

Let me try these new drivers out. ill report back later (maybe tomorrow)

And thanks too btw

They werent my drivers. I did some digging and apparently this ATI Radeon 320M isn't supported by radeon anymore.

Just last year there were great articles on this powerful laptop beast. And unfortunately last year they also quit making drivers.

WTF.

Every other game I tried works fine.. its recognized. Freelancer.. not. I am running in software-mode

The Catalyst version 3.9 drivers may work with your graphics card , however ATI never supports IGP cards since those are made specifically for one notebook so it is a bit unfair to say ATI does not support your card , for support you will need to go to the manufacturer of your notebook and see if they have an upgrade

However you probably have a better chance to get freelancer running by
a. install directx 9b
b. see if there are any BIOS or MB driver upgrades for your notebook

If all else fails you could try installing a generic VESA driver (you will get penalized severly in preformance for that)

ATI Integrated Product Support
The CATALYST™ software suite is designed to support the following ATI integrated product family:

RADEON™ IGP 320 <--- this is a longshot but worth the try
RADEON™ IGP 330
RADEON™ IGP 340
RADEON™ 9000 IGP
RADEON™ 9100 IGP

Time is too short to hate everybody , just hate a few

I downloaded catalyst

And.. when I tried to install it, it said it wasnt compatible with my card.. period. EVEN THOUGH IT SAID IT WAS COMPATIBLE.

Then I checked elsewhere on the website.. ati said taht catalyst will only upgrade the hydravision capability and some other things..b ut not the driver aspect.. my manufacturer has the drivers.

I went to my manufacturer.. fujitsu siemens, and there have been no updates of my driver since july of 2002 or thereabouts.

ATI abandoned the IGP card man.. unless you can show how to make the catalyst work.. but it wasnt designed to, IMO.

I just tweaked the system hardware accelleration for audio and graphics. Apparently, lowering them both a few notches (hardware down 2 or 3 notches and audio at the bottom) fixes the graphics/sound latency.. how weird.

I still cant get drivers for my system however.. thats an issue for me.. But Freelancer's framerate is now MUCH more stable

Previously I was having issues.. in tradelanes and asteroids my framerate went to about 5 or 6. When I pressed shift w for cruise, my frame rate would choke as well, but only until the engines kicked in. Now.. all that has been fixed.

Its strange, but true.. screwing with the system's accelleration a little makes a world of difference

I just wanna say that i had an nvidia card and freelancer recognized it...even though it was a pile of crap. I got a Radeon 9100 and i get the same pop-up window that says Freelancer can't detect card, and i get same visual problems as you... I also do experience a bit of framerate droppage during certain parts of game. I'm pretty sure i have newest driver patches, i'll check again though

well then, lower video accelleration 2-3 notches.. It really works.. too bad we dont get the benefit of the visual effects used in our cards. The radeon 320 was a screamer last year.. and your 9x00 series is a monster as well..

hm

thats all the advice i can give if you are still having those problems.. i couldnt tell if you had fixed them or not from your response post.
