Spotty mouse support?

It seems like there is spotty mouse support in ship control. FL has some major issues when I try to set any of the controls to respond to mouse buttons 3 and 4. Sometimes it will see the button push, but more often it doesn't.

I run a cordless Mouseman Optical by Logitech. Is this just a case of Microsoft only wanting to support a Microsoft mouse?

I have the mx500 and had the same problem until I mapped the buttons to key strokes instead of identiying as mouse button 4 or 5. As I use the side buttons for Cruise and Batteries, so in the mouseware applet change the buttons to emulate a key stroke.
