Downloading Mods

Hello, I have searched the various forums and used the search facility, but I can't find this Q&A anywhere. I have been having problems downloading the mod for The Next Generation (30 M. I have tried downloading at several times, including 0030 hrs GMT, 0200 hrs, 0730 hrs, 1300 hrs, 1800 hrs, but to no avail.
I cannot afford a broadband connection yet. The problem that I have is that during the download process, the computer runs smoothly for 1 or 2 hours and then stops. Alternatively, the download rate falls from 9 Kb/s to 3 Kb/s - making the download time 4 plus hours. Often during the downloads the expected time of ending gets longer and then often stops.
I have thought of finding an Internet cafe so that I can download to a 100 MB zip drive and then load it onto my system.
Does anyone know of a better way or can offer a better solution?

Your ISP is probably throttling the download automatically after a certain amount of bandwidth has been "consumed" by your connection. It's a survival technique on their part. (Note in your TOS it likely says you can't expect any certain bitrate.)

One good option would be a download manager. I'm not recommending a product, but Gozilla is on of these programs. They allow to you download big items in chunks which you can resume later. Another solution is a different browser. I'm almost positive that the Mozilla browser has "download manager" functionality by default.

Thanks for that, I'll look into it. I have been using AOL as my ISP. This is the first time I have tried to download such a large file.

With reference to downloading mods, you suggested Go!Zilla, I have found from onsite reading that it does not work with AOL due to propriety restrictions!

I gave up trying to use the CD, I went to Starfyre and downloaded the 1.60 version in just under 2 hours without a hitch.
I have got it working as far as the race with Hovis, now I'm snookered, as I can't progress (see my other post).
Thanks & Regards,
Corporal.
