The place to ask for technical help with running the demo or the full game...

FMV Hovis race = Crash

As soon as I undock from Battleship Hood and the FMV of me flying towards the starting point of the race begins the game crashes. Access Violation blah blah. Or I get the infamous Blue Screen Of Death.

I've had this problem for many weeks now. I emailed MS and DA but never got an answer in which they explained how to solve it.

The sad part is that i've never even done the race

Specs:
P4 1,7 Ghz
256 ram memory
Windows XP - Fully updated
Geforce 4 TI 4400 with 128 mb memory - Latest drivers

Reinstalled Freelancer three times now. I won't reinstall FL again for the fourth time.
At this moment i'll be happy if someone could sent me a savegame just after the race.

Email - [email protected]
Or catch me on the Calgary 24/7 server. Nickname there is Entropy

Thanks in advance!

Someone? Anyone?

I'm assuming that you don't have any mods installed...

If you do, try removing them. I've noticed that sometimes the SP missions REALLY don't like any types of mods. Other than that I really can't see a problem. The access violation sounds like a memory or driver conflict.

I dont know why you are having a problem with the system that you have. Two things that might cause this problem is a bad sector on your hard drive. Install another game before you install Freelancer and that should get you past the bad sector. Also you might want to try and delete the entries for Freelancer in the windows registry before you try an install. If you don't know how to edit the registry don't try it because it is dangerous. You can email me and I'll explain how to do this if you want.

@Glitch
Nope, no mods installed.

@Bakedpatato:
I have even reinstalled Windows XP, none of this solved my problem.
Defragged, Scanned my HDD for errors, none of these were problematic. I've restarted the campaign several times but everytime I want to start the Hovis race the game crashes right at the start of the FMV.
This looks to me that the FMV file is corrupted somehow. I can't return the game anymore (warrenty is 8 days).

So my only hope is that I can get a savgame right after the Hovis race.

There are a couple of MODS that will let you bypass the race if you would like. There are also some good suggestions on how best to win the race in the general forum though you will have to search as they are a couple of months back.

If you are really having a problem with the system crashing, do you think ignoring the problem by getting a savegame ahead a little in the timeline will correct the problem? Perhaps it would be better to concentrate on the issue at hand and find out what is causing it to crash...

Okay, i've taken my FL cd and installed it on my brothers computer. Guess what? Same happens at my brothers computer. MP runs smoothly, Sp runs smoothly untill I need to do the race. I guess I have a faulty CD. Hopefully I can get a new CD for free because I'm not really in the luxury to buy a new FL cd.

@Captain Flint:
I'm going to look for that mod. But yeah, I prefer to solve it completly.

Okay, found the "mod" Hovis Hack

I'm gonna give it a go. Thanks for the tip.

That hack didn't prove very usefull. I did exactly what was said in the post. But.........it also mentioned that I have to race the race.......So the hack isn't an option.

I got seriously pissed. Since it's thursday and the shops are open on thursday evening I decided to go back to the shop and DEMAND a new copy.

So they installed the game and said "Hey man, the game works perfectly!" So I said "here load this savegame and start the race, idiot" and..... BLAM!!!! crash. He said "Well, you screwed with the savegame but.. I have the game at home too, I'll play untill the race from the beginning..." And so he arived at Hood and started the race.......................BLAM!!!! crash. "Okay" he said, "Here's a new copy of the game"

BWHAHAHAHHAHA!!!!

Started a new game, began the race..........VICTORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the help anyways

Excellent, glad you were able to get a new copy and it solved your problem. It is a strange one though. Regardless, hope you enjoy the rest of the SP.
