Cant open Fl Readme

When I try to open the readme file either via the disc or from Start/Programs menue all I get is ' MS games\freelancer\readme.RTF is not a valid Win 32 application ' which I find amazing since Freelancer is a Microsoft product. Can anyone help please and tell me what program opens an RTF file? My OS is Win 98se

Try Wordpad or Word for windows.
Open first the applications and try to open the file from within one of the programs.
