Weird ONE SECOND LAG throughout entire game

Yeah, I'm running Win98 with an Athlon XP 1600+, 640 MB ram, and a NVIDIA TNT32 vid card, (I had to do the driver fix), and the game loads up through the movie screens fine enough, but upon entering the game, I get a weird one second lag.

The one second lag:
My computer runs the game in 'snap shots' that update every second, (not exactly the seemlessly smooth quality I would rather have). Sounds and music run fine and are not affected by the lag, but in the main menu, in-game movies, and gameplay scenes, something seems to be slacking off in my computer.

Anywho, I might just add that I haven't played with any mods yet, and am open to some helpful insights!

I used to have the same problem on other games as well as freelanceer. I found that disabling any virus scanners solved the problem. The scanners check each file as it is loaded for virii. The larger the file, the larger the lag.
So try disabling any anti-virus software you have (if any) and see if that works.

If you dont have any AV software, then try dropping the resolution/graphics detail a touch.

Hope it helps..

Just my $0.02, but it could just be the cardamine talking.

Actually, I don't ahve virus scanning software, but I did fix the problem. It was those NVIDIA drivers again. I switched to 40.73, (if I remember correctly), and all ran well. Oh yes, Freelancer = AWESOME
