Intermittant sound issue

Hey all, I am having a weird sound issue on two machines and the previous threads are fairly confusing.

Some of the sound effects don't work. I can't hear ppl on the radio. I don't hear anything when I have to wait for docking. The "tinkle" sound of money being transfered on bases doesn't work. The "crunch" of gear being equipped doesn't come through.

Only it does sometimes.

I am running XP on both boxes, one of which was having the static problem but not any more.

If and one else had a similiar problem any info would be helpful, thanks...

Are you using any 3rd party audio codecs?? I know I had that problem the first time I played. Check the README under audio troubleshooting. It might help.

If you have installed the Fraunhoffer MP3 codec that comes with the Nimo Codec pack then you will have problems with the sound. The way that I got around it was to delete l3codeca.acm, and all similar named files (ie. l3codecx.ax etc.) from Windows\System32 and then run the file 'WMFDIST.EXE' from the REDIST folder on the CD.
