Frelancer is crashing my system :-(

Hiya guys....

I am having major troubles with Freelancer. I started out by installing it and it seemed great, Everyhting worked... I notcied that there was a pic of someone, my mission leader in the first mission appearing in one corner everynow and again.

I put two and two together and figured out that this was an indication that he was trying to give me some oreders, but I wasn't hearing him. Shortly after this, The game crashed.... Crashed the whole system, hadda hit the reset button.

I read the readme, it points at driver issues and stuff. I have an Asus p4b533 with on board sound. (CMI8738 sound chip). I decide to follow the advice and get the latest driver. While I am there at asus, and because I took note of the startup message tellling me that I don't have the latest vid driver (an Asus v7700ti GeForce2) I decide to get that too.

I follow the directions that meant uninstalling, deleting the legacy codecs and running wmfdist.

I try again after reinstalling FL and then the darned thing doesn't even get past fading to black after accepting the license. So I come here. I notice that there is some thread that points out that the very latest vid driver doesn't work, so I downgrade it back to the old one.

Reboot, and bingo, now I can run FL again. Problem is, I still got the crashing problem. So I read through the 117 message thread about sound issues, and I follow the procedure outlined in the first post there.

I reboot one more time just for good measure. I play FL. I get into space, start shooting at the guys who blow up the rheinland starship and after getting my first guy and wailling away on the tail of a second it crashes again.

Now I have no idea what to try next, and I am not even sure that it is a sound issue anymore.

Just to re-iterate:

I am running on Win98SE.

Asus p4b533 Mobo
Onboard CMI8738 sound w latest driver.
Asus v7700ti GeForce II Graphics card w older driver after latest driver failed.
I have removed the installed fraunhofer codec and reinstalled with the indicated downloads as directed by the aforemetioned sound issues post.

It isn't just sound missing that is an issue, the game crashes the whole OS. Forces me to hit reset button to reboot.

Any help would be greatly appreciated at this stage

TIA

I'm running on Asus CUSL2 P800
Geforce 2 mx 400 - Newest Detonator 4.3 something. Download from Nvidia.
256mb RAM - How much ram do you have?

I don't have any other progam running in the background. Works just fine.
Get the latest directX, which should come with your freelancer.

The lasst time freelancer didn't work was when my brother installed some stupid game called roller coaster tycon. That crahsed the whole partition. It could had been a virus.

Try scanning for virus, defrag and scandisk, then restart.

If problem persist, contact your vendor for the latest driver or support.

Best solution is, reinstall window..

I couldn't run FL on my main machine due to NIMO video codecs mucking up the micosoft ones. I couldn't play .wmv's either but after uninstalling NIMO and reinstalling WMP9 I could play the game. On my other machine I had the sound problem and again NIMO was at fault except I also had to hack the registry as well.

Onboard CMI8738 sound w latest driver.

you see.. i once had that piece of hardware with the same label on it.. but the problem is.. it does not auto detect the driver as compatible... so isent it to a shop as i was naive at the time.. guess what.. the autodetect driver scannes a compatible driver as CMI 8778 from his Drivers cd.. what a wast.. 25 bucks i could have gotten more drivers than that screwed deal... the problem originated from undetectable joystick..... as i was playing Starlancer...

argh.. im never gonna get paid.. gooby a million credits..

Hi Nemir

I have much the same problem as you :-(

I bought my copy of the game last week (Freelancer)

System specs....
XP Pro (Sp1)
P4
1.7 ghz
512 Ram
GeForce 4 Ti4200
Audigy 2 (Sound card)

Nearly as soon as i get into space, my PC crashes... I get 1 long continuios beep through the speakers... And have to re-set - reboot the PC :-(

Things i have tried so far to stop this...

installed 4 different drivers for the graphics card
installed 3 different drivers for the sound card
Turned off my virus scanner
Turned off all the features on my sound card
Disabled the 3-D sound in game
Turned down the reslution in game
Defraged my hard drive

My PC crashes nearly as soon as i get into space.

Guys anyone have any more ideas at what i should do?
And no i don't think a re-install of windows would do it.

i'd give you a link but i seem unable to get onto the site at the moment.

No ...
My PC is a Dell 'Dimension 4300'
I'm not sure what my mother board is... but i'm pretty sure it's some type of dell.

But thanks for the link anyway, 1 reply is better than no replies

Mayhem all over the Modem

I finally figured it out!!

And it is something that hasn't been mentioned in any other thread, so I figured I better post the answer.. (I spent at least 20 hours re-installing drivers, the game, DirectX, the whole Operating System... I would save others this pain)

What was actually going on was that there was too much memory in my system.

Win9x can't handle more than 512M. It actually does a weird thing and starts using up its own memory to handle its memory. Or something.....

So, I followed the instructions given in a MS technote (http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... -us;253912) and then I retried the game, and I haven't had a single problem with it since.

Well, not with running it at least. There was one or two times where I died... Was that a problem....?

Hope this helps *someone* out there..... :-)
