Connecting 2 on a LAN to an internet server?

We are on a Lynksys router and we are trying to connect to a single internet server. One of us can get on, but the other gets on for a while until they launch into space and it goes to a screen that says something about "the operation taking longer than expected" and the game freezes. THe player who connected first remains on the server after getting the yellow and red connection warnings as the second player tried to join. We can each connect to different servers without any problems.

Now is this something that is server enforced? Is there some sort of port routing issue? Anyone had any success with 2 people on a LAN connecting to an internet server?

For peace of mind, yes we each have legal copies.

Last night we had 5 people from the same internet on a LAN playing in the same server and didn't have any problems. It was some off brand 5-port switch that we used.

I think a hub or switch will not require any configuration but a router might need to.

I have been doing some digging and it seems the MS ariticle (http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... -us;814550) has the ports that need to be opened to play MP FL games... I haven't try it myself but that might solve our problem.

Tell me if it works.

Some routers can only port forward one machine on the lan.. Mine does. I've got the SMC Barricade. Perhaps yours is like that aswell.

thanks pasu,
but i tried forwarding ports 2300-2400 without luck. I went to the Linksys website and it said to use port triggering for non-server applications. I tried this but the same thing stil happens.

Perhaps it will be solved with a firmware update of the router in the future.
