Freelancer crashes to desktop on a frequent basis

Here's the problem: I have GeForce4 TI4800 128MB, 256MB RAM, 1.2Ghz Pentium IV CPU, 80GB HD, DirectX 9.0a, and the latest drivers for my videocard (43.45, I believe). The problem is, Freenalcer keeps crashing to desktop very frequently. This is NOT the infamous black screen problem: it just crashes to desktop and offers me to send a report to Microsoft.

I called Microsoft up, we yelled at each other for a while, but they weren't all too helpful. I looked through the Microsoft troubleshooting website, and did everything they told me to do there, to no avail. I heard that many other GeForce4 users experience similar problems. I tried running the game both under Windows 98 and Windows 2000, and tried reinstalling older GeForce drivers (as old as 29.xx), but the game STILL continues to crash. Finally, I spoke to some chaps who own a copy of this game, but do not have GeForce4, and the game runs just fine for them.

Anyone here can help me? Any advice/assistance would be greatly appreciated.
