Freelancer & Detonator 43.45 problems

There seems to be a problem with Freelancer and Nvidia's new 43.45 Detonator drivers. Whenever I try to start the game, I either get a Blue Screen of Death with an error message or it just goes black and hangs and I have to manually reboot. I spent some time with Microsoft's Tech Support and it turned out the drivers were the culprit. It seemed to work fine after I downloaded and installed an earlier set.

Still, I'd like to play the game with these new drivers as they seem to work fine with every other game I've played. Anybody know of a work-around?

Just so you know, I'm running Windows 98 SE with an AMD Athlon XP 24000, 256 MB RAM and a GeForce 4 Ti 4200.

No, the drivers just don't work with Freelancer for some reason.

Your running a Xp24000 man where can I sign up for that one!

Get Windows XP...

Now that I recall I believe NVIDIA is no longer optimizing their driver updates for the Win9x series of operating systems, since Microsoft no-longer supports them.

43.45 worked fine on my system, BUT I am running WinXP. There is no longer ANY garantee anything will work on Win98 anymore. For the most part its considered legacy.
The detonator 43.45 drivers will still give you the warning screen though.
To get rid of that you need to get the latest "WHQL CERTIFIED" drivers. It would be nice if the warning screen actually specified this. The latest one from Nvidia is 40.72.

These drivers are the best blend of image quality/performance I've had in a while, the game looks jaw droppingly good now and it looked like it was lacking something with the 43.03 driver I was using. Not so much as a hiccup with these so far on any of my games.

xp2100+
512mb pc2100 ddr cl2
500Watt Qtec dual fan psu
Ecs K7S5A mobo
Gainward ti4200 128mb g.s (ultra 650/xp)

All the bells and whistles bar v-sync and AA. Game runs over 100-200fps constantly and looks fantastic above all! Using fraps to display fps on screen in game.

I've posted a response giving advice to updating NVidia drivers. You can find it here:

Try it, and let us know if it works with Windows 98.
