problem exiting multiplayer

Im running a:
AMD 1600+
512 mb ram
40gb HD
GeForce 2 NVIDA
56k dial-up

Everytime I either log off a multiplayer server (either exiting the game or changing servers) the game crashes and I have to turn my computer off just to restart the game....also, If I wanted to install mods, how would I go about doing that without messing up the files aready installed for FL.
