Newest Nvidia Detonator Drivers (43.45) not working with Fre

Not sure if anyone else had this issue or not but I loaded the newest Nvidia divers for my Geforce 2 card and Freelancer would not work. I would start it up and it would freeze at the intro movie. I only got an error message once. It was a blue screen error about a VxD error. I suggest you not load these drivers until they patch Freelancer or fix the Nvidia drivers.

On a side note, I had to reload my MS SideWinder driver for my joystick. they had been fine up to when i loaded the new Nvidia driver so i find it odd that 2 Microsoft based items were affected by this new Nvidia driver.

Good god, why are people panicking over this? Sometimes new drivers just *don't work* for some games. Go back to the drivers that did work, there is no magic fix for this. However, I've noticed so far that only the people with Windows 98 are having issues with Freelancer and these drivers, it works fine for me under XP.

Who's panicking? I think it's a perfectly legitimate thing to post on a technical forum that a certain set of drivers doesn't work with the game - also, it seems rather nonchalant to say that some drivers just don't work with some games. It's certainly not what I'd want to hear from a customer support person, I'd want to hear that they're aware of the problem and are working to fix it in an upcoming patch.

43.45 work fine for me.

I'm running 43.45 drivers on a Geforce 256 with Win2000 Pro. I am having crash to desktop problems so will be rolling back to an earlier version of the drivers to see if they make a difference.

In another thread on the same issue, it looked like the problem was with win 98, but maybe nobody with 2000 posted in that thread, so who knows?

i've posted some tips and advice for updating NVidia drivers in another thread. Find it here:

Good luck with it!

I tried your advice, DejaWiz. Unfortunately, it didn't work. Sorry.

When I talked to Microsoft Tech Support last week, I informed them that the problem lies with Nvidia's drivers, so hopefully they'll get in touch with them and either rush out a new set or at least a patch (yeah, they probably won't but I'm optimistically naive that way). :
Short of that, either I wait a couple months until Nvidia releases another set or I upgrade to XP.

I have to say though, that this must be something of an embarassment to both MS and Nvidia as this is a brand new game, but a lot of people can't even play it! From a business standpoint, I could see where this could potentially hurt sales as word of mouth spreds, and I'm sure MS is probably at least miffed at Nvidia for putting out a set of drivers that doesn't work with their own game.

Sorry to hear it didn't work out for you, ISmith70. When you mentioned that it must be an embarrassment for Microsoft to release something that doesn't work it got me thinking. Nah, they wouldn't be embarrassed. They're probably happy and proud that they've stuck to their past traditions for so long! Hehehe...
