I'm having a similar problem in that when I get to the Global Server screen, the only server that will return a ping is my own on my LAN. I'm running a 3Mib cable connection useing a Linksys cable modem, Linksys Router and Linksys switch. I've tried setting the ports for FL open on my game machine and putting it in the DMZ, all to no avail. FL server runs on a seperate box running Win 2K Adv Serer, my Game machine specs are:
Dual AMD MP 2000+ CPU's
Tyan Tiger S2466N-4M MB
1 Gig DDR Ram
Ti 4200 GForce4 128 DDR vid
SB 5.1 sound
Win XP Pro

-reinstall freelancer
-reinstall directx 9.0 or 9.0a
-your isp is blocking UDP ports, try scanning them at scan.sygate.com
