For those of you with the major MP issue (question and possi

How many of you are running behind a NAT-based router?

I just posted today that I have the crash-to-desktop error, I bought and installed Freelancer today, uninstalled, reinstalled, reinstalled DX9 without success... checked and recheck all of my drivers...

And then...

I'm running behind a Linksys BEFW11S4 4-port Wireless router. I noticed there was a minor revision to the firmware since the last update I downloaded and installed...

Loe and behold, I now get a serverlist and don't crash to the desktop. I was also able to connect and start in on a server.

I'll do stability testing tomorrow to see if it was just coincidence or not.

BTW - the current firmware I've just downloaded and updated my router with is v1.44.2z (yes, that's a *Z* at the end).

I hope this might help.

Where did you find that .z? The site has firmware minus the .z!

Yes that might fix some errors for some people. But I now know why I can't connect to global server: ISP is blocking all UDP ports. :'(

If you go to the Linksys website (assuming you have a Linksys router), the download page for the firmware doesn't have the *Z* on it, however if you look at the FTP link below which is from Linksys, you can clearly see the *Z* after the version number.

****** PLEASE NOTE - THIS FTP LINK IS FOR THE BEFW11S4 v1.0 WIRELESS ROUTER ONLY ******

ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pub/befsr41/befw1 ... -1442z.zip

Go to your manufacturer's site and download the appropriate firmware upgrade. I have a wireless router (and 4-port switch), which is why I'm using this particular firmware. I looked through some of the other Linksys router products, and most have a similar version number, some with a *Z* attached. As far as I can tell, the Z stands for ZoneAlarm support, which shouldn't affect us any. But like I said, I updated the firmware, and now I'm playing online without any errors at all and no special configurations.

I sincerely hope this helps some of the others out here having the MP problems.

I'm sorry I can't vouch for any other router manufacturers except Linksys, as all I own is a Linksys. But if anyone else if having these issues and manages to cure them with a firmware update, whether it's a Linksys or not, please post the results here.

That's not a new firmware at all!

Firmware Date : December 13, 2002
Current Firmware : Version 1.44.2z
Product PartNo : BEFW11S4 ver.2

If you bothered to read the downloads page, you'd see it's just the same 1.44.2 firmware with ZoneAlarm support.

I know it's not "new" -- but it was an updated version for my router... AND IT WORKED.

I was having the exact same problem everyone else was having, then I updated the firmware and tried again, and now I'm happily playing multiplayer without ANY issues (other than bad piloting skills).

I figured I'd share and let you guys give it a shot. It worked for me.

Oh, by the way, before I updated the firmware I was running 1.44z - the difference was the .2, not the z. All it supposedly added was AOL broadband support. But like I said, it fixed my crashing to desktop issues, and it was the ONLY thing that changed in my setup when testing.

Please try to remember, I'm just trying to help and pass on any info I have.
