major gliches... HELP!

I just recently started playing this awesome game and i really love it...the thing is, I get some extremely crippling gliches! At first i discovered that the game would crash if I tried to take off from a planet and the only way that i could take off was if i turned 'Cut scene detail' all the way down (weird huh?). Then i thought everything was fine...until oops....it crahses on the ship buying menu no matter what the settings! (I have had a Starflier with weapons it doesn't deserve for a long time !) i still tried to continue playing...but yet again, i discovered that when i scan a ship it crashes too!(kinda important for second story mission, damn i want outta New York system!) My system is fine for running the game at max settings and it runs very well but i dont know what these glitches are about! i wish i could play to the games fullest capabilities! My vid card isnt the greatest but it runs fine (Geforce 2 MX400) I have the latest drivers as well! I NEED HELP!!! Thanks (sorry for the long post too!)

My Freelancer crashed inexplicably, and very harshly (forced to hard-reset), for a while, until I realized that my virtual memory was eating up all my space on my XP partition. So I freed up a ton of space and moved the paging file to another drive, and now it never crashes.

So if you notice you're low on disk space, then try freeing some up. If you still get crashes, you'll have to let us know the rest of your system's specs to better diagnose. Do you have the latest video drivers for your video card?

I tried freeing up space but the same crashes occur....my system specs are:
Duron 1.0 ghz
256 DDR Ram
Geforce2 MX440 (with latest drivers)
Win 2K (on a 4 gig partition, freelancer installed on second 60 gig HD)

MX cards suck...
win2k has many problems with many games... Check microsoft for a fix or something...

I know that MX cards suck...but thats not the point....the game "runs" fine...no slowdown or anything...just the strange crashes on the ship buying menu and when trying to scan a ship, All my other games run fine, ( i forgot...also crashes whenever i want to view my commodoties!) About WIn2k...i realized i only have Service pack2....im currently dling service pack 3.....hope it will help!

I doubt it is Win2k. I am running Win2k and I have had no problems with Freelancer.

This may be overly obvious, but I had one crash so far when I had other programs running in the background and was just messing around in the universe. Besides that, not a single crash, and I just follow a simple rule of thumb - every time I'm going to seriously play (running XP), I reboot my machine. As soon as it boots up, the only thing I do is disable my virus scanner (for better performance) and then jump right in again. I also don't have many programs starting up with my system. Not trying to be overly simplistic here, but if you haven't tried that, give it a shot. I do think it can make a big difference (from even shutting down programs and THEN running the game). Also make sure you have the latest drivers for all your hardware, DirectX 9, and all that business. Good luck!

Thanks for your post Guptasa...but i do all of that and it still doesn't help I am hoping it is something easy that i can fix and that its not a pure hardware conflict, in which on my system its just not gonna work period!

Run dxdiag.exe, and see if it complains about missing files. See if your card passes the direct3d tests.

"Latest driver" for the Nvidia cards is 41.09. you might want to try reinstalling, just for grins.

What's your sound card?

When it crashes, do you get an error? Does it crash to desktop or bluescreen or what?

Finally, you might want to try uninstalling and reinstalling FL (you can keep your save games).

You may actually want to install the 40.72 driver, as that's WHQL. The 41.09 is only a candidate for WHQL...

When it crashes there is no error....just brings me back to desktop and asks if i want to send an error report. As for my sound card...its just the onboard sound on my soyo motherboard.. ALi Audio I believe.

You may want to see if it works to disable sound (to narrow it down between sound and video). There have been more problems regarding sound card issues it seems.
