Gemini - Gold and ping times

Have any of you tried my server (which is running legal Gold copy) called Gemini - Gold. What kind of ping times are you getting?

The server is running 24H/7 in 1mbit DSL line with 2.1GHz Athlon and 512MB Mem.

Post Fri Feb 28, 2003 1:39 pm

My ping times have been real good Xan. Usually in the 100-150 range at the most. Not bad for having to take a boat across the pond to reach you. Just haven't had much time to log on and play.

BTW, I think we're (server admins) all going to get bombarded starting in the middle of next week with and influx of new players. Be afraid..be very afraid...

Thanks Stinger, that's not too bad for overseas connection. When I play MMORPG games I mostly have around 150-300ms ping to the servers that are located in the U.S. And the games are still completely playable..

Anyone else?

Can you help me and check the pings for "Gemini - Gold" server

Xan,
How many players is Gemini holding without choking? I'm trying to gather notes

I haven't had not many online, I think the most I noticed was 7 persons online at one time yesterday. My CPU meter showed around 20-40% CPU usage at that time.

FL Server seems to use helluvalot of CPU power :/

I wonder who can run 128 player server, and I mean really not get it choked up

Hmm, with 9 players online the CPU usage seemed to range between 50-70%. Jeez.

Now there are 8 persons on and the usage is 15-30%. I think it completely depends where the players are, in wihch kind of area and situations. E.g. seems that areas with asteroids and such debris take quite a bit of server power.

My server is P3 1gig and with 24 ppl its 100% processor usage. Hoped with better proc things would run better but as you say you run on 2.1 gig athlon and have 50% with 8 ppl I dont have much more hope for this version of FL server. By far the most trouble is when lots of ppl seem to launch lots of missions then strange things start to happen to the point that server chrashes.

One odd thing happened today after I wrote my last message. I was watching my CPU usage and player count and suddenly, with only 2 players online in my server the CPU usage went up to 80% and stayed there for quite a bit.

Not sure what the guys were doing while that happened.

Anyway, it is impossible to play the game by yourself with the same machine that is running the Server (atleast if you have other players, 4+, playing on it). Atleast I start to get huge lag for myself and probably causing lag for the players on my server too...

One more thing, I'll be reducing the max. player count for my server (Gemini - Gold) soon. If 32 players come to my server I think the server will choke I think a much more realistic max for my system is about 20 players.

I'm looking for some options though.. we'll see

I'm currently at 23 players and the CPU usage is 80-100%. Network traffic is only roughly 5kB/s down and 14kB/s up.

CPU requirements are very hard

Server unstable? seems like it crashes quite often... very irritating when you are in the middle of a mission :/

Post Mon Mar 03, 2003 5:18 pm

well, i was at your server yesterday when you had 20/20 players on.
ping = 51-54
playability = ****ing great

I'm still looking for the target player count for the server so please excuse the sudden crashes. With 20 players on some situations will still take the CPU usage up to 100% pretty much.

I reduced it down to 18 now.

(The server code needs some optimization :/ )

Some cheats will raise CPU usage. Especially speed hacks though. Those play hell with servers for all kinds of games.

Post Mon Jul 14, 2003 4:19 pm

Like FlakAttack said cheats and mods will really play hell with a server. Also I have heard of people dialing-up slowing a system way down. Are your network up and down traffic that small? Others have theorized that player limits on faster CPUs is due to upload speeds being the limiting factor (for those who don't know most broadband, ADSL and cable, upload is far less than download speed).

I used to have flserver on my main 'puter and had a few issues with lag, don't know why. Now flserver is on another 'puter on the home network with pings of 0-3 msec but occasionally I get bad lag too. Not sure why.

As for maximum players, I have restricted my server to 21. The most I've ever had was 20 players and the CPU (Athlon 1800+) was maxxed out not to mention flserver was loaded. I also run ZoneAlarm and by itself it had 25% utilization! I eventually plan on making flserver a service plus some other tweaks that could justify a higher player cap.
