FreeLancer Multiplayer

This is my deciding point for this game, I would like to know, is the game multiplayer gonna be like "New Server, New Char" or is it gonna be Battle.Net and pretty much every other gaming service i know of (Dungeon Siege, Diablo II, Neverwinter Nights). Where your character is saved when you quit the game? I like the way NeverWinter Nights does its MP, you can make a Server Character where he is saved ONLY on that server (useful for Massive Multi). And then you can make a Local Character which stays with you from game to game, and player can ban local character and only server chars or something like that.

This would make sense, if my character cant come with me from game to game, I most likely wont buy the game, I dont care about multiple game hosting or joining, I can barely direct my attention towards just one, i cant imagine how much I could do with a few of them. For Example, ELITE can have Server Chars only, so, someone can keep coming back and get same char, but still take another char and go play other servers. And ONE MORE THING, The cities look massive and beautiful, in the game, will I be able to get out, walk around the city or at least the various places?

I like it the way it is but I find it rather pointless to land on a city then simply have to choose between 4-5 options, I want to get out, walk around, explore and wonder at the sheer size of it. And To finish the post off, will there be PlanetSide combat? can I fly my ship out to a planet and dogfight it over the ground. BTW, Im new here on the forums, I just heard of this game roughly a week ago,

Hmm... the quick one: no, no and no...

Characters are saved server-side only in MP, and considering all the cheating issues Blizzard had, I think it is the best move. Why would you want to move you character around servers?

Cities are nice, a have a great mood to them, but you can't explore them... You see more of the cities during landing and launching, and in the SP campaign, but you can't wander off... it's a space game, not a FPS.

Planetside combat... Nope... again - it's a space game. There are some games that try to achieve this, like Mace Griffin, but I'm still a bit critical as to wether it will work out...

ok, welp, if it is true I wont be buying it then unfortunately, btw, if you save it on your computer it will have a Cheat Protection System that checks if the files are exactly the same as the original games, so tampering with them is impossible, this would even rule out "No-Cd-Cracks" and Warez among others. It IS possible to do it without it messing up like BNet did, much progress has been made since then. BTW, I would be bored out of my mind playing on the same exact server all the time, I like everything I hear so far, but im a total multiplayer person, I have NEVER played Diablo II in single player since I bought it 2 years ago, and dungeon siege the same except a shorter time ago. So if I cant play a game, develop my char, then take it to a friends game and help him or trade with him, hand down items, then, unfortunately, no freelancer for me.

Sorry to hear that. You're going to be missing out on one hell of a game. Perhaps you should breakdown and broaden your mind by giving Freelancer a chance. It may not have everything you're looking for, but what it does have may make you appreciate that which you have overlooked before.

I wont judge it before it comes out, but the multiplayer outlook is grim, which is a game-killer for me. There still may be a chance I might buy it, it sounds like a game i have been waiting for ever since the release of BattleCruiser, I'm ok with everything else, and from what I hear nothing on Multiplayer has been totally confirmed yet, so I would'nt know. Only Time will tell.

Will there be standard servers we can play on?
I mean, i am from Holland and what if i cant find a very good servers to play on at all?
Do i have to depend on someone here in Holland who once in a while put's his server up?
Sorry if these are dumb questions but i also really love Mplayer

hehe, i wouldnt know, i have many questions about MP myself, this sounds like a helluva game for it, i heard that the developer at one point considered making it MMORPG but after Earth and Beyond (you know....the disaster) it was discarded. THey probably never would have done it anyway, btw, i think you will be able to see all servers no matter the part of the world

I am pretty sure you will get to choose a server to play on. Kind of like Battle.net when they ask you to choose a regional server.

Not as big as those bnet servers

but still, most ppl will play at "their" small list of servers, where they know the ppl on, take the elite server for example, I guess you will see there anyone from TLR, and aswell most of the starlancer dudes aswell.

Don´t you have your fav servers for the fps games aswell?
It´s so much more fun to play those servers than it it to play on random servers all the time.

Well, I have read more than once now that MP will be totally fan-based meaning that fans have to establish the server network.

I guess it will be much in games like Need for Speed or Unreal Tournament: there will be some companies like game magazines or internet providers who will put on their own servers. I am still worried though because if in FL the savegames are stored on the server, you will have to connect to the same server all the time.

I think it will pretty fast become a problem that a lot of free servers will be constantly filled, making it impossible for a regular to join.

Moved to MP forum.....whooosh

Damnit. Look, this is how it will work.

Though it will vary depending on how popular FL is, there will be a large number of independant, persistant state servers, such as Elite that TLR is going to be hosting. They could hold anywhere from 32 to 64, maybe even more players. You start a character, and build it up over time and do whatever you want in the meantime. There are no general USWest, USEast, or Central type servers that hold a larger number of players. You cannot transfer characters between servers. Don't ask me why, I don't know. Frankly it doesn't make that much difference to me. The game is still the game, just pick a server and play on it. Or, start a new character on a different one if you wish. It's a lot like a MMO game in a way. A lot of fun can be had just starting over and going a different route.

You will be missing out a lot if you decide not to buy the game simply because you can't switch characters from server to server.

Once again Tachyon enlightens all.
Thank you.

wait a second though, what if i build up a nice character and i just wanna go, host a game and play with some friends with my built up character? or like say my friends hosts a game, can is still join his game with my character just the way it was when i was playing on my own? i understand most of what your saying, and i probably had confused Servers and Games, but, nonetheless it would be a real drag if i had to goto the same exact game all the time, without being able to take my ship, my stuff, commodites skills, money etc and go joins a friends game and play there with it?
