Multiplayer Question

I was wondering if you need to know another persons specific ip address to join their multiplayer hosted game or not? Is there a main server that simply lists the number of hosted games at that time and the number of players in them, or is it up to you to find your own server to join? Also can you save multiplayer games? And if so, does everyone who was originally in the saved game have to be present to continue?

first question: (correct me if im wrong) i think the multiplay system is sort of like diablo 2 you can host your own game and put a password on it and stuff, and when you quit it saves you progress, or you can join someone else

Yes. Each server keeps a record of who played and saves the game for that person. When that person rejoins the same server their game will resume where it left off.
If they join another server the game will start from the beginning on the new server. And be saved there.

So by this reckoning, you can have multiple online games running at one time? Or does the game on your machine limit you to one, and if you join another server won't allow you to go back to the other?

if u could carry ur file over, that would make clans a much more viable prospect. you could literally have clan wars spanning over whole servers. u'd have a few clan members in each server to try and hold that universe. It's kinda cool, but it would defeat the purpose of being a freelancer.

I'm not sure but i think u can have multiple games running at once, otherwise a player would be stuck to one server, that could get quite anoiying.

I was just curious how much space a savegame file will take up. If things go well you could end up with thousands of people having save games on a single server.

One of the worst things that could happen is that the server decides to format their hard drive and loose everyones game. That would be bad indead!

So make sure you all find a good server for yourself before you start working on building up your character to keep.

from what i've heard. you can have multiple games saved on seperate servers. so if you start a new game on another server, you can still comeback to your old game. and no, it's not possible to port your game over to another server... so it kinda makes clan battles difficult.
as for save game size.. i think i heard tach saying that they were a mere 100kb.. i may have interpreted it wrong.. so don't quote me, i'll let one of the mods put the final words on this.

Does this statement make anyone else smile ear to ear besides me?

Im sure I read somewhere that when you start a multiplayer game you can select your starting ship. This is kinda upsetting, was looking forward to playing the MP side of things, building up my character then being able to show off to others on diffrent servers exactally what I managed to earn/upgrade/find etc.

Anyone else think this "server saving" is stupid?

I dont like the server saveing, but u gotta look at it this way. if it saved on ur pc, and u could go server to server. Most ppl wouldn't be freelancers. You could have clans spanning servers and all out wars between players. As cool as that is, it wouldn't be the point of the game, which is to be on ur own, and only really team up when needed.

at least thats what i think the point is anyways. but i think alot of people would disagree.

bare in mind i never played the game.

Indeed that would be a cool idea, Arumin, but if the files were saved on your computer, then people can easily hack and modify the files to give them an unfair advantage.

On a diffrent note, will the multiplayer game be filled with NPC ships too or just the online players?

Post Thu Feb 06, 2003 12:27 pm

I think ther will be NPC ships, would be kinda weird to just have 2 ships flying around in the vastness that is FL. If there are no NPC's then how can you do missions?

Yeah it has NPCs. Remember, multiplayer is just like singleplayer except it doesn't have the storyline missions, and you can play with other human players.

and no, it's not possible to port your game over to another server

I think it would be possible to have several servers "linked up", perhaps each one playing the part of a "different" universe. If the admins simply collected all new player information, consolidated them and passed them out to each server in the link server group thing, then all the players info would be the same on each of the servers. Then, you would have people wanting long, drawn out wars able to play on those servers.
I for one hope something like this is possible, and someone starts it up.
