Playing on own MP Server - Problem

Hello all,

I vaguely seem to recall reading about a known issue where Freelancer.exe will be prone to crashing when trying to play FL on the same computer as your game server. Can someone clarify this as well as tell me what the workaround/fix is?

try it with the FLPatch 1.1
that should work

Using the FLpatch 1.1 already.

Everyone that plays Multiplayer on their computer, whether playing by themselves or running a LAN game has to start flserver.exe
Meaning you can play Multiplayer games by yourself without having to log onto someone's server.
I have tested hundreds of Mod's in Multiplayer mode using one computer by first starting flserver.exe and then starting Freelancer and then playing without any trouble although I usually deleted the Freelancer folder and then re-installed Freelancer again to make sure there weren't any files left in the Freelancer folder.
And after re-installing Freelancer, installing the Quickfix files.

So you most probably have either some files that are causing the problem or possibly your firewall. If the problem is with the firewall sometimes just restarting flserver.exe and then Freelancer will work because now your firewall should be setup to let you access flserver.exe

Maybe if you gave more information, such as are you using a Mod, have you used and Mod's before and if you have, have you done a clean install of Freelancer - making sure that there are no files left behind in the Freelancer folder before doing a re-install.
Did you install the Freelancer Quickfix v1.0c after doing a clean install of Freelancer?

check to see if you have a problem with your firewall or security settings . i know thats sometimes my problem because i have been playing multiplayer off my computer for years and its the same machine i run the server off of. so check security out and you can use any sdk i use 1.5 my self although they say it has errors . i happen to like my 3d sound. i like those full robust explosions when i am killing.

Yes, yes, yes and yes, everything you suggest has already been done. I've installed Freelancer a zillion times and know all the usual 'tips and tricks'.

1. Clean installed.
2. Ran FL Vanilla to establish the necessary data files, then ran FLServer vanilla to establish its data files.
3. QuickFix 1.0c + Microsoft FLpatch 1.1
4. Installed the mod. (I'm not at liberty to discuss details of this mod because it's in alpha testing at the moment, but yes, there is a mod)
5. Ran Ioncross.
6. Ran Freelancer with LAN mode.

I'm using normal XP Pro 32-bit + Service Pack 2 with the native Windows firewall (and no, I have only normal TCP/IP, no IPv6 - I don't even know how you can manage to GET IPv6 accidentally installed on your computer), which I know has no issues with Freelancer. I have no router - I"m just using a 100 megabit switch which gives me an essentially direct exposed connection to the cable modem.

Now is there or is there not a known issue regarding proneness of crashing of Freelancer.exe when also having FLServer.exe running?

You know all my days playing FL the greatest reason could be, your computer it's self. I've seen people with the craziest problems and it wasn't the game, the code, or the files, it was their comptuer. "hint hint" "wink wink"

Also check the see if 3D sound is off in the audio in Freelancer. If it's not disabled from Quickfix patch.

Now the best reason(and I love this one myself). Your mod has a bug. You see when you run into bad coding or a mistake and FL sees this, it has a cow and likes to crash on you and spit out error messages you then have to spend 10-30 mins to figure it out.
In that case if it is the 3rd of the random things I have thrown out there, then you will have to work with the makers/maker of the mod and figure it out.

He's not asking for help with crashes or anything, he just wants to know if running FLServer and Freelancer on the same computer <span style="text-decoration: underline">could</span> be what's causing his problem.

As I said in my post, I have tested hundreds of Mod's in Multiplayer using one computer. So no flserver.exe and Freelancer running on the same computer should not cause a problem...

I am still haunted by this particular problem at times when I am testing my works. The biggest reason is that the game is searching for a "Global List Server" and tends to get somewhat frustrated (poor choice of words) when it cannot find it. So it tends to crash at times. The only way I've mangage to get around this malady is to allow it to connect to the internet despite my not wanting it to do so. So, to keep unmodded players from logging on, I have to set up a password and limit the number of players to 1 (myself) . That seems to correct the problem. Until I can find a way to prevent the exe from trying to locate a Global List Server, I'll keep getting that error until I allow it to connect.

Other minor errors which the Server pulls up happen to be some of the infamous "Fate_Dissapear" , "Not_Equippable" , "Not able to insert base due to ID collision" , and "Failed to find" (even when the system does not exist anymore)

But in all, I think the biggest problem causing the crash is simply that the Server is not being able to connect to the Global List Server. I see this in my error log all the time unless I permit a connection with the internet.
