Couple of thoughts .. you didn't give much info but here's some quick ideas or possibilities,, Type of internet connection dial up or High speed,, ect.
1. did he choose Lan or Internet (not assuming worst but we all click wrong button sometimes )
2. is he using a firewall ( Router) if so make sure to forward port 2300-2304
3. if the global server is down they won't show there are many utilities here to be able to connect to a dedicated server you only need toknow the ip and port of the server
4. did he set any filters in the search ( although at least one would've shown up)

I can't really guess at any more possibilities without mor information best of luck

I' ve found the Problem. Zonealarm! It blocks the Game, to when Freelancer is allowed to play online. Zonealarm is ....!
