Import SP Character into MP

I've been lurking through these forums for about a week now trying to find an answer to my question. However, I'm either not entering the right question, OR, the answer lies somewhere a little hard to find.

So, here goes:

I've actually figured out how to use my SP Saved Game in the MP Server under my account. It works great....EXCEPT that....I cannot figure out how to rename it from "Trent" to my previous newly created character: Dyre Straits.

Can anyone here assist me?

My son and I both are playing the game on our local LAN. I'm running the server on a 3rd computer. We BOTH wish to be able to use our 'leveled-up-already" ships and characters instead of starting completely from scratch again.

So, I did figure out the one way (above) for getting my leveled-up ship and credits, etc. Now we just need to be able to use our created account names.

A second question while I'm asking:

How can you create groups? According to the manual you should click on the character and INVITE that character to join you. I tried what I thought to be the way to do it and never did see any option for inviting him.

Thanks for any help.

We BOTH love this game. (His favorite game of all time was Privateer. )

First question:

- You should create a new MP character with the name you want.
- Then rename your SP saved game file.
- Do not delete the new character file yet.
- Next you should use the FL Save Editor. It's simple and quirky (you have to open the FL saved game file twice for a saved game file to appear) but it works. Open both the SP and new character saved game files (yes, FL Save Editor should be open in two different windows).
- In the new character file, copy the hexidecimal string in the box on the line beginning with "name =", copy no spaces.
- Paste this string into the SP character file, replacing the hexidecimal string after "name =". Keep the spaces as they were! Don't delete or add more space(s).
- SAVE the SP character then encode.
- Delete the new character and place the newly modified SP character into the same directory where the new character used to be.
- Done! This way will be the most complete and errorless way of renaming a character. Happy flying!

Second question:

- After say you invite your son, he should see the guy holding up his hand in the little menu in the top, right of his screen. It's actually the left most icon and it should be red.
- Click on that and it will prompt you to accept the invite.
- If the grouping is successful you should see both players in the chat screen with the same group number.
- Selecting Group Chat in the chat screen will result in magenta-colored chat messages between everyone in the group regardless of location. Up to eight players can be in a group. Have fun!

I've never gotten any errors using FL Save Editor except for the quirkyness I mentioned before. All I can suggest is have you tried more than one file? It will work on any SP or MP saved game file. Did you make a copy of the FL saved game file and insure all the permissions are set to edit it? This should be done already but you never know.

If this doesn't work you may have to try other editors out there as the authors of FL Save Editor doesn't seem to support it any more.

Try downloading the FL Save Editor again. It's possible that your original download was corrupted.
Also, you don't mention which OS you're using. Perhaps listing some specs of your computer will help better discern the trouble.

We had no problem....other than having to figure out the 'quirkiness' and get it to work. It worked great for us and we've been having a blast with the MP play on our home LAN.

hmm.. ah yes, Runtime error, so we meet again! hehe

Runtime error is a known, and usually lethal, error that *usually* occors on People who run slow progs on to fast comps. It is an enemy of any abandonwhere junky and It's also more common on XP. There are very few fixes to this problem and I have found only one, and it works, *usually* Another problem is that there are alot of "types" of Runtime errors.

I have found, after many hors of searching, a fixer for "Runtime Error 200" witch plagued me for a long time. The best place for you to start your search is at Google.

I am afraid I can be of no more assistance to you, but rest assured, that I feel your pain. Many a night I have downloaded abandonware, abandonware that brings forth a Surge of Nostalga that few have or will ever know, only to be laid to waste by the Fiend that is, RUNTIME ERROR!!

God's speed, And good luck

ps. yes, It *IS* that dramatic
