Server IP/Security Questions

Hi,
I hate to say it but I'm a noob to the forum. I was on a very long time ago with video card problems but have since forgotten that username and password. I have solved that problem. and have since enjoyed the game and all of the excellent mods and software available on this site. This site has been an incredible wealth of info for me and I have been eating it up.

As you all will probably agree, Freelancer is a serious addiction. My addiction has taken me down many paths of learning. Paths such as building a monster computer that I might better enjoy Freelancer on. Paths like buying a 27" Gateway Destination to see Freelancer better on. The path to modding which I lost all of mine in a recent hard drive failure from moving. And most recently I've gotten DSL so now I'm playing online. I've started a clan and built a website for it, which brings me to my next path and the point of the post...

Running a Server - I know how to run the server "flserver.exe" and I have Ioncross 1.2 because I'm running 98se and 1.4 doesn't play with 98
As far as I can tell Everything works the way it should.

I have a static IP address and I am running the server on my PC behind my router/firewall. I have configured port fowarding 2302 or whatever port it was. So you don't ask yes I put the /P2302 after flserver.exe /P2302 like the instructions said.

//**** My 1st concern is with my IP address. ****
I don't want to run the server again until I get some feedback. When I did run the server I was seeing the IP address of my PC (Internal Network 192.168....) and that sent up alarms in my head. Now was that because I'm connecting from the internal network? Will it show my internal address to the world or should the world most likely see the static IP?

// **** My 2nd concern - Are there any other security concerns to address when running a server besides the router/firewall and a software firewall? ****

Thanks,
SV_JJSKID

You are seeing the internal IP address because you are on the same network using internal IP addresses.

If you were to login from a remote computer or via dial-up, you would see your external IP.

As for security, non of the "security risk" applications use port 2303. One of the biggest security ports I belive is 125, for netbios commands. But as you can see, opening 2303 will not affect netbois.

I have never heard of anyone getting "hacked" or running into any type of security problem with freelancer server ports being open. The only thing you might want to be carful of is if you are running any applications that require additional ports open. (Such as FTP, HTTP, POP3, IMAP, SMTP etc)

Yes, The01 has the right of it. For you to be hacked through that port the hacker (or their program) would have to be able to manipulate flserver.exe. This is the program that is the recipient of anything coming in on that port. Since flserver.exe only deals with FL information, anything else (like "delete hard drive!" commands) would be ignored. Except for crashing flserver.exe or the OS, I, too, have heard of no hacking attempts on FL servers succeeding.

27" TV to see FL on! Talk about an immersive experience!
