Why do you play on the server you play on?

This question is for current FL MP players but any FL MP players may answer.

So why? I realize trying to get an increasing share of a shrinking market is tough but this is how FL MP server admining is. As a sysadmin it is important to me to recognize as many draws as possible to encourage players to play (and stay!) on my server. I have garnered several reasons but am looking further afield beyond Boston's community. I have also been around for quite a while and IMO have seen some excellent servers die while others I wouldn't touch continue to succeed. I still wonder why.

The opinions to be expressed here need not apply to a particular and/or named server, although that is fine as long as it's not insulting. I encourage a generalized discussion to result in a majority list of enticing things a sysadmin can do to draw (and keep!) more players on their server. Viva la Freelancer!

In a word Community. My own doesn't have a public access forum so can't have one, which is required for any server hoping to survive which is why its dying atm. As the forum is a place to talk/*****/set bounties/organise activities when you can't play.

That and as cheat free as possible, as I have seen long time existing players getting caught with both the 1.1 patch and in some cases FLCD as well as the noobs that get FLMM for the first time and try the beam/speed mod.

I agree 100% with Pinger, if theres good friendly players on the server you will attract and keep new players. Also having a forum were players can disscuss the server and even make suggestions on it all helps to improve a server's community.

I was seriously considering taking out my ungraded bandwidth on a test drive with Freelancer.

I do agree, it's about commaraderie and the experience of the individual while on a server that dictates if they stay or move on.

For fun with FL you need two things. Wingmen and Enemies.

Some goals, objectives, rewards, purpose, or depth would be nice, but MS screwed us on that one by releasing what is essentially a really pretty chat room with a couple mini-games.

If I were a good modder, I would reduce the systems to 10 or less, remove the NPCs entirely, and require all players to join one of a very limited (2-3) number of player factions. Of course the factions would all be hostile to each other.

What makes me like a server, and stay there, is the people on it.

Not the amount of people, but the quality of peopl. Freindly people are great. People who enjoy the game, are nice, helpful, and encourage a good community. But that's not what matters the most. What's important to me is a lack of ****s. I don't even care as much about having nice people as I do not having a-holes.

But when it comes to choosing a server that I've never been in or know anything about, I can only rely on what I can see on the server selection screen. Only two things affect my decision: 1: Some sort of anti cheating or hacking device, be it program or moderation, whatever. This would be in the description. 2: Ping. simple as that. I don't play on servers that lag for me. Truly, my primary sorting method for servers is to find the server with the lowest ping.
