Name already in use error - HELP

Hope this is the right form to post this in. I have a server running on my LAN. When I try to enter my player name it continuously tells me name already in use on this server - no matter what name I enter. It does this on both of my computers. I have previously been able to play with no problem a couple of times, I've even fixed the problem before - but I don't know what I did to fix it. I've retraced those steps but nothing seems to be working this time. Any suggestions??? Thanx

I get the 'player name already in use' problem when I try to connect to a modded server without the mod installed myself. Are u using any mods?

If this is not the problem try:

install direct x 9.0b
server mod 1.1
disable any firewalls software & hardware
make a fresh install of the game

We had it on one of the mercenary navy servers, and it had us stumped for one hell of a long time.

Back up the whole My documents>> My games >>>Freelancer file at a different loction and then delete the existing one completley. Uninstall FL and work from a clean config, paste the FREELANCER file back on to the My documents >> My Games folder and overwrite the new one there from the fresh installation.

Players can then access all of their old accounts, and new ones can be created without feeling the wrath of the "player name already in use" error.
