What is playing online like?

I never have played any game online what is playing Freelancer online like? I have a 56k modem will I have too much lag?

Demouser: I have no wish to join the play, but rather to see it enacted. My only concern is to avoid having the lands of Microsoftia bare down on myself.

Spammers: have C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Freelancer\DATA\AUDIO\MUSIC\music_failure.wav playing back in ther head when they visit TLR

Mods have C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Freelancer\DATA\AUDIO\MUSIC\music_victory.wav playing in their heads every time they remove Spammers

Hmmmm.... depends how reliable yr connection is...if u get the most from it it should be ok, make sure u choose a server with a really low ping, tho...if u have a SLOOOW 56k connection, either stay away from other players or save yrself the headache and keep away...i started on 56k, was ok if on my own but in a group the lag was awful, then again i had a REALLY poxy connection...if u find a ping thats lower than 100 it might not be TOO bad...trial and error, I'm afraid...MP is much better than SP in my book, it's just nice being in a universe with real people...
OH YEAH WELCOME TO THE PARTY!!!

I had 56k - and i was fine on most servers. However- go to the MP screen - and then click on PING tag. This will sort out servers due to their ping (low to high, if not - click again for reverse order), then pick one that looks lively without tons of lag. Ping of under 50 is excellent - but unlikely, ping around 200 is acceptable on a modem.

If you don't like the server- move on, no point staying somewhere you don't like - and i do advise you pick one with SOME poeple on it - as that IS the reason for playing in MP.

One last word of warning - pick a server that says it is 24/7 as well - nothing worse than logging on and finding your server aint there!. Check the news for rules and regs - and abide by them. Admins will ban if you break rules - and unlike the law - there is no court of appeal.

If the server has a website - check it out - it usually means that there is a community going there............which is BETTER than others - also - check websites for news about the server - in particular clans, as you might find one tolling you for access to certain systems - and when faced by an eagle with nomad loadout, and your in a freighter - well, its a little late by then!

Have fun - as MP is DEFINATLEY the best point about this game!!

p.s- DON'T CHECK OUT ANY MODS even if people tell you too - playing MP is great for MONTHS before moving onto new pastures. Its on hell of a big universe to explore
