MP_Newbie

I am fairly new to freelancer, both in game experience (80 hours SP), and forum posting, so if this is in the wrong place I apologise.

I would like to start playing multi-player, as the SP universe doesn’t seem as big now, can someone give me some advice on which servers are best for a ‘Newbie’ and if my few ‘mods’ to the ship_arch.ini , (10000 cargo bay and 500 bots/bats) will need to be removed so as not to be active in MP. Any other advice considered relevant would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

really depends on the server as to which is best, but pick wisely as you are investing time and money (if pay as you go access) so you want your new home to be a good one. I am on the uk server which seems good for me.

Most servers do not allow mods so yours will more than likely need to be removed

Great, I’ll try that one. Is there just one ‘game’ running or is there a game I can join where I’m less likely to get my a** kicked 10 seconds after spawning?

on most servers noob killers will get thier ass kicked if they kill a noob you should be safe
unless you try modding on a server where its banned then everyone will kill you

That’s fine, I only chucked the bots & bats in to better explore the border world systems.

p.s. is a 56K connection fast enough

p.p.s I am still running version 1.00, is this going to be a problem?

56k is playable, if it's not AOL. I have dialup too, but for PvP it's a disadvantage.
Keep the 1.0 as the 1.1 patch is really for server side. Look for rules in server
descriptions for things like 'No PvP in NY'/Liberty' and 'No Mods' and check ping.
(wait a while for Ping #'s on 56k)

[steel is right. Noob killers are dispised by almost everyone. They are just like the xenos, they must be eradicated

Calgary 24/7 is also a good place to start. Lots of people to protect you and or help you get started. Just don't enter the server and start yelling I WANT MONEY!!11!!1. Start by asking for a loan. Nowadays people just give you the cash and you won't have to repay them anymore.

1) 56k works very good with freelancer ( I would know)
2) version 1.0 is all that there is, Microsoft hasnt patched the game or anything yet so most servers run 1.0. Any other versions that you may see are mods created by the comunity.

There are 100's of servers to choose from but not all are 24/7. Personally I would pick a 24/7 so that you know it will be there when ever you go on line.

I play 56k and you sometimes get a bit of lag, ships will suddenly jump from point to another but it is fairly uncommon and most of the time you can live with it.

Player killing is actually not all that common at all, I know when you look up and down these boards there is constant discussion about it, but in reality you hardly ever meet a Pker. Most servers either ban or discourage Pking in at least New York, some all Manhattan and even some all of liberty, so you normally get a chance to find you feet in safety.

Do not play with your mod, some servers can pick up that mods are being used and you can banned for life almost instantly with no chance to explain yourself or anything. Further more most players will hunt modders down relentlessly which also makes it a bad idea.

Depending on how good a pilot you think you are, I would be tempted to stay away from Calgary, Seattle, Elite servers as they are the most popular and also where all the 'clans' hang out. The whole clan thing attracts PvP fights either because of inter clan rivalry or else hot head players that want to fight a particular clan for some reason. You can become a pawn in the middle of this, as Pkers might target a newbie just to get the attention of an anti Pker clan etc etc.

Also you are only really in danger if you are carrying cargo, as that and unattached guns are all you loose if you die.

Oh, I forgot: In MP, Job #1 is get neutral with Rogues.

Yep Sideshowbob has the idea.

If you are looking to join a clan, the best way to do it is to talk to them while in game. Establish contact and if you and they get on and you agree with what they stand for, then you should contact them on their website.

Clans make you feel at home because you can fly with people who you know and like. Plus you share the same set of goals inside the game.

I had a go at MP last night, connected, opened the game, chose multiplayer, then the computer sat there saying ‘connecting to global server’ and promptly crashed five times is a row.

Is this a common problem, (this is Microsoft after all), and if so, how is it resolved.

p.s. I would like to add a picture to my profile signature, how is this achieved.

Call me stupid if required, but what does '{img=} tags (use square brackets)' mean.
