Starting your own server

I have a couple of questions,

1. If I use my computer as a server, can I use the same computer to play on the server, or do I need another one to connect with?

2. If you create a server when do people know of its exitstance, does it happen automatically or to you have to Publish it somewhere?

Sorry for the noobie questions, but I have an enquiring mind and just wanna know

Your jealous cause the voices only talk to me!

1. yes u can play on the same machine but its not advised, you will use a lot of the CPU and cause stuttering on peoples machines when they access server side info.

You dont neccasserlily need to publish it cos it should show in the Internet server list via freelancer, but it will help if you do.

Servers are always welcome but consider this:

Are you gona spend time and moderate it?
Do you want to operate it for long time? maybe even 24/7?
Do you have at least basic infrastructure?

In general how serious you are.... if you not then dont bother.

Firstly, the simple answer to your questions are yes you can run a server and play on the same machine and the server program (FLSERVER.EXE) has an option which will cause it to announce it's existance on the global server.

In reality you wouldn't want to play on the same machine unless you're only running the server for yourself and a couple friends; it'll will only support a few players before CPU utilisation becomes a problem.

If running server is this manner here is no need or benefit in having it listed on the global server; you can just give your IP address to your friends and have them connect directly to your machine.

Question, I'm trying to just set this up on my mone lan with 4 computers, while the games runs great in single player on each system. I can't get the multiplayer running. I've no problems running other games on our lan, this is the only one. Thanks for any help I can get.
