Bandwidth?

I'm would like to get a server that has the max capacity (128 players). How much bandwidth would this use monthly?

Also, the server would be on a colocation place, would i have to copy my Freelancer dir to the server?

With the current server EXE 128 isnt possible, even 50 and the server will be laggy/unstable. My main server is run by a ISP with a very respectable setup and can't go beyond 32 players. That's not including idiots that have enabled mods and lag out the server.

The current server application isn't capable of supporting 128 players; it becomes laggy and unstable from around 32 players upwards and it's unlikely you'll be able to get anywhere close to twice that while keeping acceptable latency and uptime.

Besides the application itself, the main constraints on a Freelancer Server are CPU and RAM. Even a Pentium 3Ghz ver suffers from lag as it approaches 30 users and soon becomes unstable as more players join. Bandwidth doesn't tend to be an issue; traffic per player rarely exceeds 5Kbit/S during play and is much lower, almost insignificant, while docked.

To answer the other part of your question, Freelancer needs to be installed on the server. You could probably get away with copying across the folder structure from another machine and importing it's registry settings. However, ISTR it also checks for the CD-ROM, so the Freelancer CD will need to be in the drive to run a legal copy.

Ok, so how many GB's per month on average does a 32 player server use?

Post Wed Jun 25, 2003 5:02 am

5kbit/s x 60 sec = 300kbits in a minute. 300kbit/min x 60 min = 1,800 kbits in an hour. 1,800kbits/hr x 24 hours = 43,200kbit/day. 43,200kbit/day x 30 days = 1,296,000kbits in a month.

That may seem like a lot of data, but think of it this way:

1 byte = 8 bits

So

1,296,000 / 8 = 162,000 kbytes per month. Divided by 1024 to get megabytes, you get 158.20.

And there you have it. One player on a server for an entire month will consume about 158 megabytes of bandwidth for that month. Multiply that by 32 (which seems to be the max for players) and you get 5062.4 megabytes per month, or 4.94375 gigabytes per month.

So, about 5 gigs of bandwidth per month for a 32 player server. (A very rough estimate.)
