Server Police

Don't you just hate cheats? Here's what to do. Kill 'em! I've had this idea on a few forums (that seem to have died). We should have a group, not a clan, of people going around taking out cheats on servers. I have a cloaking device mod that won't crash peoples comps but wil work (not with NPCs it seems). We will go to servers with reports of cheats and 'resolve' the situation. The first thing we need is a name and then I'll do applications. We will also need 2 see if we can transfer accounts to servers. I think if you send your username (The thing in the My Documents folder for admins) from your best server and other admins just put it in their account directory. All ideas are welcoms. Bounty Hunters has been taken but we can use something like 'Cheaters Nightmare'. We will not be killing Dock Campers, only cheats who use hacks and editors. I think we should work for free, unless admins offer

ADDITION - This will only work on v1 servers unless v1.1 admins want us to teach 'em a lesson.

I have been an unofficial server policeman on AC 2 since the cloak was revealed. I have a list of at least 20 people that use cloaks and kill other innocent players.

yea using a cloak is initself cheating, cheating to kill cheaters isnt the answer,,u know 2 wrongs dont make a right. yea cheater are very annoying but just taking screenshots of cheaters and emailing to server admins,to ban them,in the mean time just ignore them.

One question: if the cheater is the kind of cheater that edits his/her stat and makes the ship invincible, how are you going to kill him?

Post Fri Jun 20, 2003 4:06 pm

The only thing we can do for those ones if confirm that the player is invincible. If it's a rumour, the person has nothing to hide so won't avoid us. If they do, wel'' hunt them down until we can test the claim, then we tell the admin the username and he/she will ban the account. In other cases where the cheat uses money hacks, it's a lot simpler. We ask them to stop cheating and if they refuse, we shoot to kill.

BTW, still looking for name suggestions.

vigilantes are cool, but i heard some dude hacked a nomad battleship with super long range tizonas, he stsrted sniping a player, then the server crashed.

uuuh, we're not gonna take it that far. Were only gona use buyable ships and buyable/tractorable weapons (Excpet my cloaking device I got ). We'll use the Anubis if we can edit it to be sold at Manhattan complete with good weaps, but only if we can do that. I can't, so sum1 else in the group will have to do that. That's if people wanna join it. Still looking for name ideas.

Oh and Perseus, I guess that means your in on the idea? Mail me if you are.
[email protected]. Same with anyone else who is. Namesuggestions will go here.

I don't care what your reasons for modding are, if I see someone with a modded anything I'm going to do my best to blast them

One problem; how would you tell who's a vigilante and who's the cheat(er)?

I have thought about the police/militia angle as well but I found that there are two basic problems: it is difficult to verify claims of wrong-doing against somebody unless you happen to be on the scene yourself so that you can see what is happening, and the regulators need to be able to deploy fast . I think the only exception are equipment cheaters that edited their ship/weapon stats in the files; but you cannot catch cheats that modify the game in memory because they can revert to normal when the regulators show up.

As I said elsewhere, the game could do it easily and therefore it should. I.e. if there is a case of non-consensual PKing then the game should deploy a wing of souped-up Patriots/Drakes/Banshees (equipped according to the toughness of the offender), lawful bases should turn hostile and all exits out of the system should be blocked with gunboats/cruisers + fighter wings. The police doesn't have to be super-tough - I think it is okay if a skilled player can beat them, and the APB should wear off after a while (doesn't apply the cheaters/modders who the game should simply boot immediately). The basic idea is simply to make tollers/pirates/etc. face higher odds; so if there are couple of kids in Titans camping a dock then they would eventually deal with about a dozen Banshees or Eagles and that should give the lamers something to think about.

This solves both the verification and rapid deployment problems because the game 'knows' about all that is going on and it can spawn fighters right at the scene of the crime.

Of course, the game currently doesn't do this.

Players doing duty in a permanent police/milita could get special equipment like long-range scanners and cloak, and they could use a special-made array (or cube/sphere) of jumpholes for rapid deployment. Players willing/able to handle a call would simply load their police character which would stationed in a base adjacent to the jumphole array or already floating in space in front of the array.

Of course, somebody has to vet the people applying to enter the militia and create their police characters (savegames) for them ... And the force could be spread rather thin if a bunch of rogues do coordinated strikes in several places at the same time (just like in RL). But I think the FL server capacity is several orders of magnitude to low for such a 'community' solution to be feasible currently.

To tell the difference between cheats and vigilantes, I'd use a tag or something, foe example, [CNWakan_Tanka (CN being Cheater's Nighmare) or something.

It seems I've split the forums on this one. People are either for or against this idea (The minority are in between). I've got a few friends up for the idea who really wanna teach cheats a lesson or two. The only thing they think about it how do you know if people are cheating. We don't find the cheats, we kill the cheats. I couldn't care about the people saying "2 wrongs don't make a right", I'm just the cleaner.

so mr cheater puts a [CN in front of his name. then you're still both cheating and no one can tell the difference until they try to undock. you can try to justify it any way you want but you're still cheating just as much as they are.
