Joining multiplayer from behind a router

Can any one help me I am trying to join a multiplayer game but can not see any servers. I am running from behind a router which I am not sure if it affects anything. It is possible to manually connect to a server other than getting one listed?

it depends on the type of router but they all work reasonably the same. yu may need to open certain ports to access the global/servers. i forget the ports offhand, cos mine worked straighway, it just had info overload sometimes and locks up and boots me :
someone may post some ports here not sure which you may need but u cazn access your router's settings thru your webbrowser.

You can try to open these ports: UDP 2302-2304

And if it still doesnt work try to reinstall DirectX 9.0
