New to FL

Hello all. I bought FL this weekend and i am currently playing it offline. I see that it have a multiplayer part as well and i have some questions about that.

1) Do i use my singleplayer character when i join a multiplayer game? (what i really ask is: Do i use a local character? and if so, how is that protected against cheating. And if not, do i have to start a new character on every server i try?) Can you "save" your current character, ship and loayalties so you can play with that character on SP...?

2) How many servers are hosted by the developers? Can it be played in "mmorpg mode" at all (think EVE)...? Or are there only small, local, fanbase hosted servers (like Never Winternights)?

3) How many players are normaly online on a persistant server at peak hours? The world seem gigant, doesnt it have to be quite a high number of people online to fill it out. Do you ever run into another player at all? Maybe you are only supposed to play it MP with a few of your rl friends so you can schedule game sessions?

4) If you die in SP you have to load a saved game, i guess you can not do that in MP. So what happends if you die in MP? Do you only have one life? And if so, what stop vet players to grief pk newbies...?

5) Do you always have a ship, like in SP. Or can you loose your ship and have to start from scratch, maybe take on jobs for another player such as controling a turrret..? Can several people play in one ship or do everyone fly their own?

6) Can you send pre-recorded insults (wingcommander)? Can you make text macros that you can send to people during combat? What communication modes are there? Can you send private messages even if the recipient is in another galaxy? Does the game have a headset feature inbuild, or do you people use teamspeak?

My internet connection at home is offline atm...

Must say it look like a nice game tho!
BTW, does anyone else experience that some dialogues are missing. Maybe it is my soundcard...? Is there a way to turn on subtitles so i atleast know what they talk about during the moments when i can not hear the dialogue in SP`..?

1.For every server you play in you have to have a different player, you can also have mulitple chars on one server
2. The games are usually small, but the main server which most ppl play on is Elite, run by lancersreactor.
3. Elite is full almost all of the time, im not sure about other servers. Elite holds about 30 ppl. Abut running into ppl, it depends on where you go, house capitals and edgeworld planets are usually crowded with a few ppl. Clan wars keep the game interesting.
4. If you die in multiplayer you may choose to respawn at the last base you docked in, also when you die, anything that is in your cargo hold will be lost, but money, mounted weapons, ship, and interior and exterior equipment will not be lost.
5. Everyone has there own ship, and besides, how fun would playing as a turret be? Anyway when you start yu have a starflier and 2000 credits
6. There are a few types of chat, one is system chat, which sends the message to everyone in your system, then theres group chat(look at rulebook for info on groups) which sends the message to everyone in your group, no matter where they are, and finally there is private chat, which sends a message to a particular person, no matter where they are.
I hope this helps

7) So if there are several different servers, how is patching handled? Can different servers have different patches? (i assume that you have to patch on the client side as well..?)

8) What about hackpaks/mods? Do i have to download something to my client side if the server is running a hackpak/mod?

9) in SP i cant seem to explore other systems than liberty (im only in the start), as i try to hop from huston/texas to hudson i get "access denied" (bought information about a system in the "german" sectors and i am trying to reach it somehow). In MP, do i have to aquire the access codeds to the different systems or will all be open from the word go?

10) i read somewhere that there will be about 30 ships. 4 types, that 7 or so per class..? In MP, what class should one aim for (mostly PvP and of course some PvM but not so much trading i guess). Light, Heavy or vHeavy fighters..?

11) Are there PC trading convoys(sp?) that hire PC protection against priates (both mobs and other players)? And if so, how do they do it without notify the priates that you are comming..?

I didnt get my internet access yesterday either
Hopefully i get my 10mbit before the weekend tho... hehe
Cya in space!

Mess with the best, die like the rest...

7. (dont know)

8. Most of the time yes, if the server is running a hack or a mod u will have to install it on the client also, but sometimes the server install will be enough (depending on the cheat/mod). U can find more info on mods in the FAQ.

9. In SP mode: wait and see, it's part of the scenario. In MP your access depends on your level (in the beginning), of course hidden or secret warp points will have to be found as usual...

10. It's up to you, depending on what kind of playtype you like (trade/fight?); generaly aim for the highest class instead of a certain type...

11. what u mean by PC?

Hope for you, you will have your access for the weekend... ;-)

To answer eleven, I think you meen npc, or non player charactor, just remeber that all npc's in mp act the same as in sp except those integral to the storyline. Basically, npc's cant realize that some players are pirates and hire you to protect them from players, they're not THAT smart. With ten, to not give away too much, The ships that support the highest weapon and shield classes are very heavy fighters, while freighters dont even come close, so I suggest if your trading in a player killing server like elite, you should get an escort.

by pc i meant player character. so, yes, it does seem as if trade players does hire escort by other players to protect them. sounds cool

Thank you for answering my questions. I feel that i have a good idea of what to expect once i get online...!

It is a shame that there is no freelancer online set in a mmorpg environment (maybe i should test EVE?), but i will sertainly give the PW (persistant world) servers a shot! The game is amazing. Atleast so far!

I like the work that have been put into this site. Load of nice resources here.

Well, cya online

With regards to your sound problem. I'd get it fixed now. Check out here for a step by step fix.

It might just be annoying now but it will make it very difficult to get past mission 3 (there is a workaround but its a bit messy). Also the fix sometimes doesnt let you past mission 3 (again you could use the workaround i suppose but i'd be suspicious about stability after that) and you have to start again /reinstall which is a pain.

Also there is a group called RES that offer to escort people for a small fee. There are a few posts kicking round with their names etc.
