Server fast enough?

I made a multiplayer LAN server and joined it. Going in and coming out of Jump gates was really laggy, and around this one busy station I noticed ships kept skipping backward and forward again. This was right when I asked to dock and they put me in the waiting line. It’s usually fast but it took like 4 minutes this time. Then when it went into the animation and my ship was docking, another ship came out of the port I was docking into at the same time and we had a head-on collision. Since it was the animation there was nothing I could do but watch. My ship turned around and then made another approach. Then when it was coming in another ship came out and made another head on collision! And then when my ship tried to go inside the door closed and it hit the door. And then finally it got inside but nothing happened, and then my ship flipped upside down and the door closed and nothing else happened. The animation just sat there forever and my ship never actually docked. WTF?!

So my question, has anything like this ever happened to one of you before? I’m wondering if maybe my server isn’t fast enough to fun the server? I checked the performance graph and it didn’t seem to be stressing the system, but damn it I can’t think of anything else. Here are the server’s specs:

Dual P3 Xeon 550Mhz (The ones with 2megs L2 cache)
1Gigabyte Registered PC100
30Gigabyte Seagate 7200RPM Drive

Too slow?

I have had worse things on me. .

Once I played on a server Called BOOMTOWN #1. that server crashed all the time. THe tale is like this:

I was to dock at the Leon Base and put "Dock" on. I got granted and my ship "Docked". But in the last second, the server lagged and my ship came into the docking bay, stayed there, flippd around and the door shut behind it. I got angry, re-connected to the server and this time, the fr*cking plane was nside the Docking bay!!! Me unable to get out, re-connected, AGAIN. This time, I was on my way to roll over in laughs.. My ship, had been somehow transported thru the walls on the Dokcingbay and I could fly around INSIDE of the Leon Base. (With the base I mean the big stone) I flew around some and decided to re-connect again. Said and done, now my ship was outside the Leon Base and I could dock again.

The thing that happend, I hope you understand, was that the server lagged, and made the Animation go, but nothing was really stored. I keep going in and out of the lagging server and my plane jumped a inch every time I logged in.

mmm k...

So when a server "lags" what is that usually caused by? Being that it was a LAN game, I don't think it was the network connection. That leaves the speed of the server itself in question... but I wanted to see if you guys thought that was the problem.

Packet rendering (pipeline). Calculations [CPU usage) to render the images. How Cache handles the transferance of information. RAM overload. Many many factors can affect lag.
