FL Server on XP Professional

Hi

I have been trying to run a FL server on my XP Prof. machine at home. I have left it running at times for hours on end and no one seems to log on. I realised that this was possibly because of the XP personal firewall. I checked this and it showed various UDP ports automatically setup for the use of FL Server.

I also then ran the freelancer game and logged onto my own server through the multiplayer method without any problems.

All seems to be fine from my point of view. Can anyone shed some light on the correct method for setting up a FL server on a XP Prof. machine that uses the XP personal firewall (that comes with XP as standard) please.

TIA
John

Definitive answer: You can do either, but routing the full range from 2300 to 2400 will guarantee the best experience for the gamers who come to your server.

If this is the case how can I open the entire range of ports on this firewall ? I seem to be only able to specify one port, I dont want to have to manually make 100 entries for each port.

just open 2302, this is the standard port for the freelancer server.

and you could post your ip address so that we could test if it works

You'll be in much better shape if you shut off the XP firewall and get something more useful to replace it. The fact of the matter is, the XP firewall is a poor implementation of a good idea. First off, it only filters incoming packets. Trojans, spyware, etc have full access to the world from within your computer. As you already stated, blocks of ports cannot be assigned in the "ruleset". To allow 10 ports TCP/UDP, you'd have to make 20 rules... total pita IMO.

Try ZoneAlarm if you want an easy-to-use firewall. For more flexibility, I prefer Kerio Personal firewall. Both of these are available free, and they even allow for application-based filtering. This allows the opening of specific ports for specific programs only. If the program isn't "listening", the ports assigned to it are effectively closed.
