can 56k play MP?

no pbs on most servers...
A bit hard on PVP but to explore and level up it's ok.
Quite hard on "seattle based", it lags too much

I would imagine that the lag depends on the server, and you connection stability.

Obviously, if you are unable to connect higher then 33.6 type speeds (V.34) then you will experience lag.

If you are connecting 40-53333, then you would see less lag.

It appears that this game was "inadvertantly" made to work best with Broadband.

However, I would imagine there is not much DA can do about the Dialup lag...Since they cannot control the connection speed/stability, except make it so that there are less or smaller packets transferred between client/server.

From what I have heard modems are fine untill you get into really big battles. Once you've got a few players and about 10 to 15 AI fighting it out in the same spot, it seems that the data transfer outpaces a modem.

if its made for broadband, why cant i connect to the global server

I think there are a few issues with server connections, (people not being able to commect to servers, global lists not working right etc.).

Hopefully the patch should iron out some of these problems.

It is possible to play MP with dialup. I have played alot and it mainly lags when there are AI fighting nearby. It almost never lags at other times.
My connection speed is around 24-28k also.

I play 56k and I don't have any problems with lag that broadband or dsl players don't have. I pretty consistently get a 53.6kbps connection. But when i'm getting lag its server wide. If you stick to servers with 350 pings or less you'll be ok.

yes

One of the other things i have found to cut down on lagg is make sure all your IM services are switched off cause they can play hell with yer game also go into run and type "msconfig" and go to the end tab and make sure non of the programs running are chewing into ur bandwidth i would also suggest ya empty yer cookies as wel may all sound dumb but the over all effect does help.

in my experience, i can..
(i live in Hong Kong and i had used dialup to join a MP Server also located in HK)
it is quite annoying when u are having a mission and all the hostile ships just hang around and u can't hit them at all (my experience is Xenos whose like flies), then after a few second u get shots and shield and hull just disappeared and u died without noticed that there are any hostile nearby...
very lag for more ships...
