Multiplayer with no connection

Is there a way to develop a multiplayer character (on LAN for example) without being forced to connect to the internet. I am on a 56K modem that usually only gets about 43K.......it is my only phone line without any other alternative.

I completed SP and am at level 33 on SP, but have a lot of factions hating me. Would like to start over

Sure, just change the list server hostname to "localhost" (or your local IP on the LAN) in the freelancer.ini file. By default, the FL server tries to connect to fllistserver.zone.msn.com, which is kinda dumb for a LAN-only game, but they didn't provide separate list server settings for the two types of games.

Thanks, will give it a try. Only way I was able to play multiplayer was on my 56K and even with the best pings, there was a lot of delay and I had the feeling I was dogging down someones server. Did try playing as a server and then logging on my own server, but while it was better it still wasn't a good solution.

You will certainly get better performance from the client if you don't run the server on the same machine. But, it's quite possible to run them both, given that your system is powerful enough to do it smoothly.

Gave it a try last night and it didn't work. I first initiated the server and then brought up FL. Went to multiplayer and couldn't see my own server on the LAN, then tried internet and it said that it was trying to connect to the global server.

I altered the freelancer.ini file by inserting ;;; prior to the server at microsoft and removing the ;;; from the other one.

How long does it take to find the server? I waited only about 30 seconds before I gave up...sometimes it takes up to a minute or so on multiplayer when it is using the microsoft server, but I thought it would go a lot faster.

I use the localhost setting when running both server and client on one machine with Win2k, and the client finds the server immediately. If you're using just one machine, maybe your system isn't correctly resolving "localhost" into the local IP on the LAN, so try putting the local IP explicitly. If you're running the server on a different machine than the client, you have to tell the client the server's IP with a command line parameter. The README explains how to use the -s parameter.
