Bandwidth Usage???

Hi, does anyone know how much bandwidth the FL Server uses? It's possible to run a server for 8 peoples with a 512/128 ADSL connection? Thanks!

It not the bandwidth that is the bottleneck, it's the CPU. That connection speed is fine for 8 people, maybe even more if you've got a decent processor baking it up.

Server Config:

AMD Athlon XP 1800+
512MD DDR-RAM (266Mhz)
60GB HD (7200RPM, ATA100)
GF3-Ti200 (64MB RAM)

This is my server configuration! Can I also play on it, as 1 of the 8 peoples, or will it lag? Thanks for the quick response!

hmm someone know how much trafic per user?

would be intersting to calculate the costs of hosting a server.

Traffic per user is subjective. If all they are doing is flying around exploring, then the packets used would be minimal. If they were in a dogfight in an asteroid belt with 8 enemies all firing on them, then the packet usage would go through the roof.

Hard to determine even an average. ;(

hmm do you know how much traffic elite makes per day?
so I have at least a guess ... everything up till 250 mb per day would sound very good (though I doub it, thats only that much)

up to 500 would be still relativ cheap to host I guess ... but with about 1 gig per day the traffic costs would start to get a important factor for mosts hosters I know ...

One player on a server uses between:
0.5 - 4 kilobytes down
1 - 10 kilobytes up
Average about 0.6 down and 2 up from server I'd say.

Now the more players fighting etc, the higher this would go. When 1 player is fighting a group of Rogues he uses about 6 - 10 kilobytes per second during the fight. Each player uses around 5 megabytes per hour upload and 2.5 download.

So, my guess would be to run a smooth server, you would need about 6 kilobytes upload per player. That way when several of them, but not all got into the bandwidth you still have a bit to spare.

hmmm ok lets double this just to be sure, to 15 mb per user per hour.
15x24=360 mb per user

hmm ... 360x30 rounded to about 10 gig per month per user.

darn definatly out of my price range.
though lets still do the cals, lets say 64 users, this would be about than 640 gigabyte traffik per months ... ok lets get back to 7.5 mb per hour per user ... still 320 gig per months ... does elite really have over 100 gig traffik per month?

sounds kinda high and expensiv.
anyone knows a hoster with unlimed traffic for server housing or renting?

If its more than 3gig a month then Ill let you know....Ive been running for 15 days now and I have a 3gig cap then back to modem speed for my cable !!!...

Of course theres not a chance in the hell the friggin Server software (or no-ware) would tell you...and I cant be bothered setting up a router mon.

I've been running a Freelancer server from my company's COLO facility for a few weeks, and found the following bandwidth usage (bear in mind, we've only had 2-4 players on the FL server at any given time)

Server Spec:
CPU: AMD Barton 3000
Mem: 1024MB
Disk: 7200 RPM Seagate

Network Spec:
Media: Fiber
Type: Intel Gigabit Ethernet PCI

OS: Windows XP Pro

Bandwidth Usage:
0 users:
Inbound to server: 2032 bits/second
Outbound from Server: 1352 bits/second

1 user:
Inbound: 6,400 bits/second
outbound: 10,000 bits/second

3 users:
Inbound: 18000 bits/second
outbound: 24000 bits/second

Peak outbound: 50,000 bits/second
Peak inbound: 62,000 bits/second

Haven't noticed any CPU/Memory lag, but the server isn't heavily loaded. Usage seems to scale fairly linearly on a per-user basis.

For reference:
Modem Connection: 56Kbit/second (56,000 bits/second)
DSL: 768Kbit/second Inbound, 256Kbit/second outbound
Cable Mode: 1.5Megabit Inbound (1,526,000 bits/second) 384Kbit/second Outbound

As far as download throttling, and download limits, remember that
8 bits = 1 byte

Compared to other mp games (such as BF1942) this game is a dream, bandwidth wise. Our BF1942 server, fully loaded with 64 players nabs about 8 - 10 Megabit per second ( ~8,000,000 bits/second)

I run 2 people A-ok on a 512/128 ADSL

The same server on a LAN will run 8 people no problem
server specs
PII 400mhz
192 mb ram

Post Mon Mar 31, 2003 6:15 pm

i think that will host 8 fine

i host 16 on adsl 512/256

cpu is the bottle neck not the bandwith my server spec is

amd 1.4
396mb ram
30gig hdd
no sound card
crap vid card
Lan Card

hmmm, seems more and more that the traffik per use is somewhere between 7.5 and 10 mb ... thx to you two for the detailed infos.

aswell the commonet about the traffik usage of bf42 was intersting ... maybe I can use this as argument with a hoster to give a sl server with a good deal of players a chance. without getting the prices up prices alot over 100 $ per month.

btw, I am looking still for good hosters that I can check, may it hosters of gameservers or dedicated windows servers in general.
