MP community still too young!!

Well im just letting off some steam with this post.

I really think that the MP community evolving around this game is still too young,it really needs more serious players and some serious server admins.
I have had 6 characters,1 on my private server and 5 on public servers and the only one that i still have is the one on my own server.it´s a big pain in the butt when you find a good server and take the time building up a good character just to see the server gone or have deleted all its characters the next time you want to play.now i don´t cheat and i think that cheating in games are lame but i can also see why some people make use of the money cheat cause its totally lame that they have to start over time after time.Just this saturday evening i was on a server playing and i met another person who was just starting on the same server,we grouped up and started making some money,we were online for many hours and finally got to a decent level when we decided to call it for today and play again the following day, well on our arrival back the following day the server was gone even though it had the 24/7 written in its name.thats just one example my new mate and i still wait to see if it´ll come back up but other servers i have had characters on didn´t come back.
Many servers has probs with client made mods and cheats i too have experinced some of the cheaters on several servers, this is a serious problem and can have a great influence on the evolution of the MP community and i will as many others have done already contact DA to let them know about the probs and ask for them to release a patch quickly.

Now if you want to flame me for this post go right ahead, cause only morons and cheaters flame posts like this anyway.

Actually, I agree with you. This is a probalem that should be resolved promptly. Though, in the case of the Elite server, that was cleared BECAUSE of cheaters/MODers.

how true, how true.....

i am in the same boat, i have 1 character on my private server, and have tried to play on 4 different "public" servers, only for each of them to end up in the same fashion. If only someone could start a 24/7 server and ACTUALLY leave it up all the time. I wish i had another computer to setup my own public server, that way i could do it right. i also hope that somehow if/when they ever patch this game, they can do something about the cheating....

gee, lemme load up a character on a new server, use my cheat, then i am lvl 38 with unlimited money, flying around in a eagle/titan/sabre with nothing to do but blow up people that are actually trying to play the game in the way it was meant to be played...... man,.... doesnt that sound like FUN?????????

(or doing already) I got 2 computers and yes I am trying to make a server out of one of em... and since I don't use the comp anyways it's fairly logical to make it availabe 24/7..

Yes, the total freedom for setting up the server is a problem for a persistent-world game. Perhaps DA should've forced server wannabes to go through some server registration, including e-mails, server availability, etc.

A word for those who want to set up a server: put certain sever info in description, something that will make players think your server is trustworthy and truly persistent

I have heard many server admins complain about a potential memory leak in the server program. These reports vary, however, in the length of time each server has been active. But, in general, it seems that around the 20-30 hour mark Freelancer becomes seriously lag ridden for all users logged in. At this point it becomes necessary for the server to restart. I know, this does not require a complete character wipe, but it seems quite a few servers cannot be active 24/7 (even though they have it in their name). And some ppl just feel that it is just a bit of a hassle to check up on their servers to ensure that everything is going smoothly and that it does not need a restart. Especially right now that spring break is going on (well, at least for my area and the various college campuses within 100 miles of me). So, this is just to let you fellas know that sometimes it's just not feasible to have a 24/7 server. However, if you can setup a daemon to restart a server in the event of a crash, then by all means, host your own server. Cheers.

Well my server has been up for about 8 days....Ive had one total crash in that time (andI happened to be there when it happened so it was down for about 30 seconds).

I have an email address in its descritpion as well as the fact its private and the fact its 24/7.

One problem is performance. Despite having a 2.2ghz P IV multip cpu box with a good connection...if I run more than say 8 players it starts to live in the yellow/red far to often. Especially (as far as I can tell) if one system has say 5+ multiplayers in it. Ive dropped the user count from 32 to 16 to 8 and at 8 its good...but 8 is a disaster (tooo low) and indeed from my other computer I often cant get onto my own f*(&%^( server !~!~!

My other problem is 0 admin tools....0 admin advice from the makers on how to tune/improve my server performance, hunt for the cheats and manage my machine.

When eventually I do shut it down (unforseeble future) I will email anyone their account files (if I can work out whose is whose !).

Pah !

Oh and Im not telling you the name (other than its in Australia) as the server is fully loaded often enough !

Evil propers when the good do nothing......so keep the noise down or we'll wake 'em

I personally think there will always be a problem on the Mutiplayer side of things. Simply because when I had Starlancer the game never took of big time on MSN Game Zone, with only ever a handful of people ever being there at any one time playing the game online. I put this down to the fact that Space Games do not seem to have the following, that other games like "Rouge Spear or Flight Sim 2002" have, were you can find hundreds of people playing it online.

This I thing will always pose a problem unless there are sundenly hundreds of converts.
