This MP game is hard

Want help in running a persistent server? Want to setup a gaming session? Look no further!

I've been playing MP for a while now, started from scratch several times, and I've never been "jumped by 8-15 fighters", especially never around Manhattan. In fact I've never been jumped by more than 8 fighters in Liberty space, and the only times that happened is because two different faction patrols of 3 or 4 ships each happened to cross each other and I happened to be there.

I agree completely though, the Starflier can't really hold its own if you're against 4 or more enemies with those cheap weapons you start the game with, and you're not a relatively good pilot. Your first priority should be to head to the nearest bar, get yourself an easy level 1 or 2 mission, win it, and repeat the same process over and over, progressively upgrading your weapons and ship.

Once you get a Patriot, with a Class 2 or better shield, and some Lavablades, nothing really should be able to touch you in the core Liberty systems. Especially since cruise-disruptor-wielding enemies are few and far between, and you can easily run away from a nasty situation (refer to the several "fast docking" to trade lanes or jumpgates posts floating around).

The AI itself can easily be thrown off if you use afterburners (the TAB key) often in combat. If you find yourself being repeatedly pounded from all sides, hit the afterburner and don't fly straight. And if you really feel like pulling a frontal attack on 4 incoming enemies, remember you can strafe left and right.

omfg.... anyone who thinks MP is unbearably hard is deluded....

sure, if you are on a server with pk'ers who won't let you leave the docks at Manhattan, or are at lvl 38 and think it "cool" to run around blasting only ppl under lvl 10 then MAYBE I could agree with you....

however, I just started a brand new character on a new server, PVP on, went off trading (not shooting ANYONE, even if the trade lane went down), and am now at lvl 38 after only a few hours play. Now I am going to look at sorting out my rep, and maybe change things. whoever posted about getting to know the factions is spot on. if you get that bit right you can do almost anything you want.

if you are SERIOUSLY finding it that hard, talk to someone who is at a higher lvl than you and get them to give you advice or money or something.... because mate, MP is not as big a problem as you make it out to be....

Wow.....MP is amazingly easy in Freelancer. If you get killed too much by NPCs then you should head back to single to practice. As others have said you can get to lvl 38 in a few hours. Then explore and manipluate factions all you want.

agree with giving 25K to start out.

If freelancer isnt an RPG but just a space shooter, doesnt it follow that getting guns should be relatively easy?I mean there isnt anything hard to trading, especially since lots of good routs are posted on this forum. So why having to trade at all? I think most ppl here have passed to SP so they proven that they can take a load of goods x from point A to point B, so why making all new players go through a 10 hour routine of geting to lvl 30+? Just give everyone a million and let ppl simply fight eachother

oh god no, we would have even more whiners that whine how they get killed.

Reading is a fine art, and most ppl have no sense for art.

If you have the guns then why whine when you get shot?

I get it most of ppl complaining on PK here do so because of the camping fags that just sit with their maxed ship on some newbie trading route and amuse themselves by raping ppl. And dont tell me that with enaugh skills and organisation newbies can fight off.

I mean when beat SP I ended up on my Anubis in liberty.I trashed some cops inorder to get lane hackers friendly to me.Alll the ships near manhattan turned red on me, still they couldnt get my shields down even though I was simply hanging in space not attempting to maneuvr (well honestly they WERE denting my shields slowly but stadily, but then we are talking police (they have defenders?) and we are talking LOTS of them, and damage they did to shields could be recharged by simply moving. couple of shots from my weapons (I think I had lvl6 adv skyrails?) annihilated any ship. Now I didnt get to titan/eagle/sabre ships, but from stats I gather that they are significantly harder then anubis, and I definetely belive that lvl 10 weapons>lvl6 weapons.

IMO with trading and different ships Freelancer is definetely an RPG not just a shooter. And most RPG have some sortof system that protects newbs. If its a simple shooter like CS allow players to freely choose their weapons/ships.

Suggestion: Lane hackers are supposed to be tech wizards who are ex-employs of organization that made trading lanes. Yet one only needs enaugh aim to target way gate and voila, the lane is hacked, doesnt even require a special weapon or anything. Stoping this for players (I think its reasonable that npcstill disruptlanes) would mean that all pking would either hapen by mutual consent or happen near large stellar objects where police could provide at least some help and where victim only needs to run so far till they are safe again (Also locking tradelanes in system for PK'ers could be fun)

At lvl38 only fun you have is missions in omicron systems (Titan bashing) or nomad hunt. Even that gets boring very soon. You need other 38'ers for a challenge.

Other day I accidently blew up a freighter outside New Tokyo, and I had like 10 Kusari cops on me. They kept coming, I shot like 50 and got bored, so sure, lvl10 ships are maxed out compared to NPC's.

To the original poster:

Here's my typical opening. Sell a justice mk 1 and promptly buy 2 justice Mk2's. This is better than getting a single Justice Mk3 (24 hull compared to 2x20 hull). Do a few instant gratification missions (assassinations are typically easy). Get approximately 40000 creds (you might have to upgrade to a patriot or some other cheaply bought fighter) then purchase a rhino. Start doing trading runs that are EXCLUSIVE to the liberty system. It's not bad if you don't mind taking your time. Sure it's not the most profitable runs, but it's something. Add to that is you won't be attacked by pkers (at least on the Elite server or any other that actually enforces it's pvp rules). That's just one case of an early game...but so far it's worked fine with me. Other ppl have different early games, but's that's part of the fun: finding a method that you like on your own. Good luck to you. Cheers.
