Alo again - somethings screwing up royally here - i have tried my utmost to follow the numerous hints and tips and tutorials etc and im 90% there,, but when i resize the sur to the cmp one of the parts goes out of sync.

What am i doing wrong???

Post Tue Sep 04, 2007 3:22 pm

resizing the sur in FLModelTool? if so, thats prolly why

Cheese is probably correct in that FlModeltool is messing things up, it was designed for vanilla SURs and not custom ones, it also renames all of the component parts of the SUR as "ROOT".

CMPs, 3DBs, SURs & MATs can and should be done entirely in milkshape, the only other tools you need are UTF edit for minor alterations to the MAT (glow maps etc) and HardCMP for your hardpoints.

The only other thing I can think of is that I said to use shrink wrap, I've never tested it as I've only worked on ships and they use the bubble. I'll dig out an old SFC station tomorrow and see how it works, but iirc it's bloody huge so it will probably take me some time to do a SUR for any testing.

**shuffles off with a new headache**

If FLmodelresizer causes the issues then that sounds like the likely case then - in fact im also glad that is the issue as success is so bloomin' close.

I'll give that a go then and see how it all works out, as it is, the collision detection is fine - its just that re-sizing

Thanks dudes... i run to get even bigger headaches

just make sure the scale is set to 1.000000 in the sur exporter and all should be fine

it has a tendancy tho to not work (itll just stay as default and that means itll get smaller..... way smaller ) so in the CMP exporter make a settings file with the scale at 1.000000 and save it and load that into the sur exporter

I've just gave myself a BLOODY BIG HEADACHE, this is the first time I've done a station and none of my SURs work right for it either.
I've ripped apart a couple of vanilla station SURs to see how they've been constructed, this is the source of my headache as they are not constructed in the same way as a ship or any other smallish object, ATM I cannot think of any way to replicate thier construction with what we have available. As an example I opened the prison station CMP & SUR, the CMP has 10 components constructed from 28 groups, the SUR has 641 components, 574 of which are called "Root", the rest are weapon placements, baydoors and the shrink wrap, and unlike a ship SUR not one of those 641 are duplicates. The SUR Exporter cannot do this and I'm not even sure if Dev's SUR-Splicer would be able to do it.

odd... so far one of my tests have proven successful - its one of the solar "parts" i have made that will combine to create the whole station. After a lot of fuss i ended up getting it to register both weapon and physical hits.

I will confess that the rest of the station needs to be done yet - but the current success gives me hope. I followed Devs own tut and it worked.

sounds like the stations surs are made face by face :S only way i can think as to why there are so many groups :/

Post Thu Sep 06, 2007 5:37 am

hmm - that is weird - i shall have to have a peeky as i do the next phase of my station which is the main part of the station - i'll be sure to post up the results

Post Thu Sep 06, 2007 2:16 pm

its really annoying, but im doing all the stages just like dev's tutrial states - but on thi next peice of the station the sur seems to hover slightly below the model itself.

is there anything that might be causing this? nothing i've done is particularly different from the 1st part i made.

did you export both your model and SUR from unscaled models? y i ask is that when i do a SUR fitting i fit it in ms3d, and then i save it separately - if i resize the mesh before exporting and do not select scale from origin instead of center-of-mass i get one model that is slightly off from the other on export and assembly. maybe that was what happened *shrug*

im going to kiss you if this works

...just kidding - but thanks alot man
