Screen resolution?

Don't know if it is right place to ask...
I've bought new display(samsung 740N,17",1028*1024),launched FL.I've noticed one thing:
planets,targeting circle and other objects that have to be round seem to be oval-shaped along virtical axis(in the centre of the screen,changing screen resolution doesn't help).Looks a bit annoying...
I had no such problems with previous display(samsung 510N,15",1024*768)
Guess it"s all about screen geometry and screen resolution and guess nothing can be done.But maybe there is a way to work it out? Or is it a common issue with FL(and other games?) and 17" displays?

What refresh rate the monitor have? Try with lower refresh 60Hz and DPI setting on Normal (96DPI)
If that doesen't work reinstall the drivers for your monitor.

The way I see it, your display stretches FLs resolution of 1280x960 to the displays native resolution of 1280x1024. No wonder the image appears slightly weird. Check your screens manual, if it has an option to turn off automatic interpolation on resolutions that are not your screens native ones. If your screen doesn't have such a function (mainly because it's more common among widescreen devices), try to look up something similarily named in the options of your graphics driver.

If your screen supports 75hz without internally reverting back to 60hz, I highly recommend the screen to be run with 75hz.

Oh, and btw: welcome to the dark side of things concerning TFTs. Hopefully this is the only drawback you'll ever notice.

Reading the manual right now...and doing everything else...
But what's about others?Do they have the same problems with 17' LCD or me only?

On LCDs, it always depends on the displays native resolution and it's ability to turn off automatic interpolation of non-native resolutions. If interpolation is turned on, the display will always scale resolutions to match it's native one. This is a thing all LEDs have in common, even > $ 1000 ones.

Say you have a game running in a resolution of 1024x768, which has an aspect ratio of 4:3. If your screen has the same native resolution (1024x768), the image won't change.

Same game, same game-resolution, but the native resolution of the display is now 1280x1024 and thus an aspect ratio of 5:4. This means that the vertical axis will be stretched a bit to match what the screen needs.

Same is true if the game's resolution is 1280x960 (like in Freelancer). This is a resolution with a 4:3 aspect ratio, too, so without the proper function of the display or the graphics driver to turn it off, it will inevitably be stretched.

And playing freelancer in a window is impossible,right?
(Hope I am rong).

It is possible, althou you'll lose a bit of performance. Create a shortcut to freelancer.exe on your desktop if not already present, then open the properties of this shortcut and add
-w
at the end of what's inside the "target" field.

i also have a question to this. Does FL support 1280*1024???

Post Tue Sep 12, 2006 4:09 pm

Nope! It only uses 4 resolutions, they are

800 x 600
1024 x 768
1152 x 864
1280 x 960

in either 16 or 32 bit (high color or true color).

It doesn't matter what res you run your desktop at as most games auto reset the res to the games generic settings (FL's is usually 1024x768x32). Vital if you've changed the res in FL's options to 1280x960x32 and are still getting the distortion then it's either your moniter isn't auto adjusting itself, mine did this (I lost the top and bottom HUD as they had been pushed of screen) and I had to use the OSD to reset it, or you graphics card doesn't do 1280x960.

What is OSD?

Post Wed Sep 13, 2006 3:34 pm

On Screen Display

It allows you access to the monitors menu and adjustment settings.

Well, in the tutorial for making ship icons the author says that it´s best to use 1600x1200 so it must be possible. (Maybe its just because Freelancer doesn´t know my graphics card)

Stefan 1600x1200 is a 4:3 aspec ratio which is all that FL is programed for, anything else will just be distorted as FL tries to fit it to the screen.

I've found this:
http://www.lancersreactor.com/t/forum/t ... rue&S=True

I changed in perfoptions.ini:
This:

[Display
size= 1280, 960
color_bpp= 32
depth_bpp= 24
To this:

size= 1280, 1024
color_bpp= 32
depth_bpp= 24

It looks OK,no oval planets,but another problem comes:
Top HUD is lower and bottom HUD is higher then it should be,but shield,energy and hull bars are on the right place at the bottom of the screen(only bars,not HUD for it).How to fix this?Anybody knows how to change HUD position?Guess I am not the only one who faces this.Guess it"s somewhere in INTERFACE/hud.ini or INTERFACE/HUD/hud_txm.ini,tried,but didn't succed.I am in dispair.

Guys,I really need yor help.Please.
If anybody knows anything,please,answer.

I have the same prob with mine..but to be honest it don't really bother me that much,it doesn't obscure much and it's just a niggly thing that u can live with.

Failing that get a older,crappier monitor just for FL lol
