How much can you wander?

I just got the game last night and have played it for approximately 3 hours. It seems like I have to keep going on these missions with King, but do I really have to? What will happen if I wander off? Can I come back to the original story? I just captured the relic smuggler at the beginning.

The Story will always be there. You can wander, decline, kill the allies of the LSF as much as you want and still it will tell you to goto King.

If you go around killing police and transports early on your might have trouble docking at the station to talk to King.. but during a mission anyone that is hostile to you will be flagged as neutral EXCEPT for mission encounters. So you can go around killing say BMM then start up a storyline (or other) mission they will be flaggs neutral.

During the time your suppose to help the Blood Dragons I started killing them near the police I killed about 150 of them and I was frendly with the police again. And the Dragons were hostile. When that Blood dragon guy told me to go back to Kyoto I had no problem docking. It's just I had to fight my way there MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
