Question re: blowing up experimental battleships

If you are stuck in a mission and do not know how to continue, this is the place to ask for help. Missing that elusive Level 10 Shield? Don''t know where to find the lost Ohtori ship? This is the only place where spoilers are allowed!

Question re: blowing up experimental battleships

Okay, I'm on the last couple of single player missions, (like 11 or 12) but I'M NOT DONE YET, so try not to spoil the end for me.

Anyway, you get the mission from the Order where you're supposed to destroy the "prototype" big ships that Liberty is constructing off somewhere. And these ships are sitting in drydocks. There's about three of them.

Well, when I played the mission being a good one to follow orders, I managed to get in right next to one of the enemy ships, sit underneath it, and pound it with weapons (even mines!). I was able to use it for cover from the enemy, and I blew up the first ship.

As soon as it blew up, I got the message that we didn't have a chance and had to get out of there. Then, looking at my personal log, it said that one of the friendly Rheinlanders had sacrificed himself to destroy the drydock while we escaped. What the heck?

So, what's supposed to happen on that mission? What did you do?

It follows the storyline it was the same for me...

Did you kill one of the big ships by yourself also?

I did the same thing for that mission also, using one of the prototypes as cover (flying in and out of the berth) and managed to destroy one... I'm not sure exactly how -you- did it, but I remember it took me a good couple minutes to destroy it, and meanwhile there's all sorts of comm chatter with those poor Bundschuh (spelling?) and Order pilots getting blown to pieces. Botzler decides that they would never survive long enough to destroy all three, so he flies into the berth and self-destructs (though I didn't quite understand how -that- worked).

Considering I was right between the prototype ships, I figured I should get out of there pretty fast, so I didn't really see what was going on except for the big explosion bit. I dunno if that helps.

Destroy a lot of battleships/gunboats and the story will do the rest
There will come backup for the enemy , you get message its pointless blabla and some of you will sacrifice himself blowing up all the experimental ships.

Hmmm what does this button do ?? .....

So, theoretically, if I just played it, didn't destroy the ship under construction, and took out fighters and whatnot... the ol' Fritz would still go kamikaze?
